While the Bahamas lie just off the Great Antilles and south-east of Florida, the Bahamas are situated in the northern Atlantic and not in the Caribbean, but sometimes the Bahamas are recorded as islands of the Caribbean. Many of these islands are technical speaking calays or islands with corals, and most of them are deserted.

Its name " Bahamas " comes from Spanish and means "shallow water". The Bahamas have blossomed since they gained sovereignty from Britain in 1973. The Bahamas? There are more than 700 islands in the Bahamas. Christopher Columbus is thought to have landed on the Bahama Isle of San Salvador in 1492.

Originally the British came in 1647, and the Bahamas formally became a settlement in 1783. The Bahamas remains strongly Anglicised because of its long tradition with Great Britain. It is the formal English and Christianity is practised by almost everyone who resides there. In fact, the land is very denominational and has the highest proportion of Caribbean church.

Although the Bahamas are made up of several thousand islands, only a few dozen visitors get genuine interest. Nassau, the home of the Nassau area. The Grand Bahama is known for its astonishing caves. A lot of companies own and run their own resorts. The majority of the islands in the Bahamas are long, shallow reefs.

The best period to explore the Bahamas is usually between the end of December and the beginning of May. Fill your day by boat around the islands, nibble on the torn shell, swirl the locally grown rums and paddle in the 80-degree water all year round. It is denominated in the Bahian Dollars, but the US currencies are also widely used.

The Nassau is a real celebration for the spirits. With its energetic atmosphere, the Bahamas capitol will heal any case of stateroom bug and thrill even the most travelled people. The town has some remarkable museum, and the most interesting is probably the Pirates of Nassau Museum.

The Bahamas History Museum houses a humble museum of documentation and archaeological finds. It is a retrospective of the history of the islands from the Lucayan period to the present day, and the entrance fee is just to see the unbelievable Santa Luceno galley in Spain.

While Nassau is a pulsating town full of life, there are many places to take a rest from mayhem. The Augustinian Monastery, one of the most impressive and tranquil places on the island, is located above the rock-perch on Bernard Road. Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Nature Park also provide a nice way out of the city's sometimes overpowering hustle and bustle.

You can see many wildlife up-close including western India flamingoes, apes, iguanas, threatened Bahama parrots, serpents, hutias and caymen. Children and grown-ups alike are enjoying the Atlantis Waterscape, the biggest open-air tank in the run. The Government House is one of the most attractive structures in Nassau. It is a cheerful rose-orange building that overlooks Mount Fitzwilliam and is home to the general gov.

Blackbeard's Towers is another of the most visited attractions in the town. Situated to the north of Fort Montagu, the stony lighthouse provides an excellent panoramic position over Nassau. Nassau also boasts lively Rawson Square, the beautiful Bahamas National Trust Garden, White-Sand Cable Beach, 1800s Balcony House and the Eastern Cemetery, where buccaneers and other varmints are graves.

It is the biggest town, capitol and trading centre of the Bahamas. The 2010 Nassau Peninsula Survey estimates that Nassau has almost 250,000 inhabitants, or 70% of the Bahamas' people. Nassau was first known as Charles Town, before it was burnt down by the Spanish in 1684 and reconstructed 9 years later under the name Nassau.

In Nassau, Bahamas, English is the main English-speaking area. Christianity is the dominant religious system in the Bahamas, other faiths are acceptable. It is the offical denomination of Nassau, Bahamas and is located outside the US-Dollars. Nassau's weather is known as a tropic monsun with fairly constant temperature all year round, regardless of the time of year.

Excceeding temp. of 92 degree Fahrenheit (33 degree Celcius) during the summers, Nassau rarely goes below 50 degree Fahrenheit (10 C) during the winters with an avarage day to day temp. between 68 and 80 degree B (20 and 27 C). Lynden Pindling International is the nearest international airfield in the town.

It is only 9.9 leagues from downtown Nassau and offers day-to-day services to the United States, the United Kingdom, the Caribbean and Canada.
