Tutuila American Samoa

American Samoa Tutuila

North Coast Avoiding the crowded port area of Pago Pago is the simplest way to get on a coach to Vatia on the northern Tutuila coastline. There are several busses all around the city. It is a scenic town with a beautiful sandy beaches, and the countryside around it is magnificent with jungle-covered summits that surround the town from all sides, and the memorable Pola Island (also known as "Cockscomb") with its 100 metre high rocks and rolling seas.

Situated in the centre of the Tutuila section of the American Samoa National Park, if you are interested in organised hikes or cruises in Vatia, call the Rory West (Tel. 258-3527 or 644-1317), which can offer cruises at 45 US$ per person and organise walking tours at the same price if there is enough interest.

A deserted WWII dumpster on the Tula shore. East Tutuila is easy to access with the regular Tula busses that run along the south-east coastline throughout the entire city. In Alao and Tula there are broad sand shores, but be careful of the suction. The Samoa Observatory, founded in 1974 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), one of five such climatic surveillance labs worldwide, is located on Cape Matatula just behind Tula.

Coming from Tula (end of the line ) continue on the northern side of Tutuila to Onenoa.
