Founded in 1834 by American Christian missionaries, the Christian congregation was supported by Deborah Kapule, widow of the Queen of Kauai, and Governor Kaikioewa of Kauai, who provided the lands. In 1997 Limahuli Gardens was voted "Best Natural Botanical Gardens in the U.S." by the American Horticultural Society.
