Fishery: AFMA on Norfolk Island

At the beginning of May, my co-worker Tod Spencer and I went to Norfolk Island to speak to the municipality about the Norfolk Island inshore fishing industry, also known as the "MoU Box". The discussion on the 2009 inshore fisheries policy revision was our primary motivation for our visit.

The need in particular to acknowledge the important role that the Council and the Fisheries Association will play in the future administration of fisheries. It was a pleasure to be on Norfolk Island with our Parks Australia counterparts John and Fran to talk about the operation of the naval fleet, which is due to come into effect on July 1, 2018.

During our four-day trip we were able to get together with a broad cross-section of the municipality, which included the Island Administrator, the Norfolk Island Regional Council, the Council of Elders, the Norfolk Island Fishing Association, the Chamber of Commerce and the Flora and Fauna Society. I was encouraged to listen to and see the Norfolk Islanders' enthusiasm for fishing and its importance for the lives of so many people.

We have jointly negotiated that the Fisheries Association will start with the first revision of the policies, which will then be coordinated with the EU and interest groups with a view to the signature of a new one later this year. Thank you to everyone we have seen for feeling so welcome and we want to be back on Norfolk Island this year when the outline of the new policies is open for open consultations so that we can respond to all the issues and debate all the amendments to them.
