Traveling to Polynesia is not as simple as you might think, as few carriers actually operate to the area and all those who use Tahiti as a basis. As Moorea Island is virtually in the shade of Tahiti Island, you actually have a few choices, unlike most other islands in the large archipelago, where a plane is the only convenient way to get there.

Chances are you're headed for one of the best resort in the South Pacific, as Moorea surface bungalows all offer world-class real estate. So, the first thing you need to do is find out how to get to Tahiti. However, the brief response is that you will almost certainly fly there from Los Angeles, even if you start in Europe.

to Tahiti, then what? When you want to spend the night in Tahiti itself, perhaps in one of the surface bungalows in Tahiti, you will certainly want to take the boat that departs directly from the major port in the capitol Pape'ete.

But if you go directly to your Moorea residence, it is best to take a direct flight from Tahiti airport. When you are tempted to stay a few in Tahiti and then take the boat to Moorea, it's not really worthwhile.

The Moorea itself is actually more attractive than an island, and Pape'ete is unfortunately a little dirty and not so interesting anyway. It' all right for a fast trip if you're already on the island, but it's not really rewarding to get out of the way to see something else.

Like I said before, you are almost certainly flying from Los Angeles to Tahiti, probably with Air Tahiti Nui, the long distance domestic company from Polynesia. When you arrive there you switch to a smaller propeller aircraft on Air Tahiti, which is actually a completely different air company from the long-haul one. There are four daily departures most of the year, first at 7:15 and last at 17:15.

There are 5 departures on some dates and 3 departures on other dates during the December holiday. However, the trouble is that most but not all Los Angeles arrivals come later in the night, which means that many arrivals will stay about 8 hrs before their early birdie. There is a ferry fare of about 12 US$ per passenger and route, which is much less expensive than the ferryboats. It is more convenient and only takes a little longer. Unfortunately, the ferry does not sail in the darkness, so if your Tahiti trip arrives after about 4:00 pm, you will spend the evening on the island.
