When you believe the brochure, every boat is full of luxuries. However, the reality is somewhat different, and on some British boats the luxurious element is noticeable missing. As a rule, these bulk carriers are older and do not have the subtleties that characterise the three biggest US lines - Carnival cruises line, royal Caribbean international and Norwegian cruises line - of which the first two also operate select cruises from British ports.

Lanai's 39 new state rooms are equipped with glazed slidable entrance windows (mirrored for privacy) leading to the walk-in Lower Promenade decks, where two recliners are reserved for upscale use. Visitors can also benefit from luxurious spas that can only be reserved in these cabins.

A further bolthouse is the adult retreat for a residential-styled swimming pools event, as on P&O Cruises' Britannia. Every trip to the Avening at Le Cirque provides a foretaste of Sirio Maccioni's famous New York based cuisine. When P&O Cruises presented this adult on Azura, it turned out to be so loved that it was accepted into Ventura and has now proven its worth with the travellers on the new Britannia flag ship.

The Princess Cruises has built an adult sanctuary on the sun deck. Two person pick nick racks can be supplied as well as health food from a separate meal. There is a retreat pool on the sun deck and six pool cabins with two deckchairs available for rent.
