The city of Manitouwadge is a town in the Ontario area. The Ojibwe Manitouwadge (Manidoowaazh in Ojibwe, which means "cave of the great spirit") belonged to the territory of the Ojibwe indians. Another mine in Manitouwadge is the Willroy mine, called after two of the "Weekend Prospectors" William Dawidowich and Roy Barker.

Manitouwadge was classed as an improvement district from 1954 to 1974. In 1975 the municipality was transformed into a registered municipality. She provided shelter in Manitouwadge for many of the new mine's workers, and the city was booming. Manitouwadge's coal mines have always been at the cutting edge, but forest management also has an important role to play in the city's overall economies.

It is also turning into a retired municipality and offers some of the cheapest house rates in the state. Summers are open for many outings. The most important tourist and residential tourist destinations are hunt, angling and gulf. There are also plenty of walking paths in summers and paths for snowmobile drivers in winters.

Close by, Mose Lake is called after Moses Fisher, the local leader of James E. Thomson during his 1931 Manitouwadge discovery. Manitouwadge was classed as an improvement district from 1954 to 1974. In 1975 the municipality received the township rating.
