It' hard to limit this to only 17, as there are many interesting points on the South Island. This article should give you a foretaste of what to see on the South Island of New Zealand! Nevertheless, it is still one of the best places on the South Island!

One of the best places on the South Island is Milford sound! Odds of seeing the sounds on a drier sunny morning are low as the west coast of New Zealand has some of the highest precipitation in the word. It was a great view and we went to the flowing rains.

Make sure you take a trip on the boats to see the sounds up closer and find out more about their creation! To me, Milford is one of the best places on the South Island. Vanaka is a nice city on the shores of Wanaka and one of the most wonderful places I've ever been! This is a calmer alternate to Queenstown, the views over the sea are just amazing and there is a great laid back atmosphere in this place that I love! It is the epinephrine city of New Zealand and probably of the rest of the globe.

The Queenstown is definitely a place that should be on your route on the South Island of New Zealand! It is one of the best places on the west coast of the South Island. Scenery is different from the remainder of the island and more tropic. Some of New Zealand's best sandy areas can be found here and it is well worth driving to Farewell Spit, the most northerly point of the South Island, for a great view of the Tasman Sea.

The Abel Tasman National Park is not too far away and has many interesting places to discover. Francis Joseph is the home of the Francis Joseph Gletscher and this should definitely be on your schedule if you are going on a West Coast route because it is one of the best places on the South Island of New Zealand!

It is a small city itself with not much to see, but it is a picturesque place and as everywhere in New Zealand the view is great. The Slope Point is the most southern point of the South Island and a fascinating place. Unfortunately, this is a place I could not visit.

From the various photographs I have seen, however, it would have been an interesting place to visit. One of the first places I'd go if I were to travel to New Zealand with my backpack again! With the omnipresent power of the south wind, the tree is bended into odd forms!

Caikoura is a nice small city on the east coast, just northern of Christchurch. This was one of my favorite places I went to on the South Island! Seaward Kaikoura Mountains, which belong to the Southern Alps, are easily seen from the city and offer a breathtaking scenery.

Walking on the coastline is strongly advised in order to enjoy the view and experience the beautiful sea life that surrounds the area. Arthur's Pass is a place you will come across if you are planning a New Zealand outing. It runs through the centre of the South Island and connects the east and west coast.

If you walk through a chain of mountains, the view is amazing and it is definitely a good idea to stop and soak everything. Dunedin has many interesting attractions such as the Dunedin train and Speight's Brewery. Moeraki Boulders are definitely one of the most extraordinary places in New Zealand!

Moeraki is one of the best places on the South Island, just because the Moeraki boats are so uncommon. One of the best places on New Zealand's South Island to go to rest and relaxation is Hanmer Springs! Like almost everywhere in New Zealand, the landscape in Hanmer Springs is stunning.

Although Hanmer Springs is only a small town, it is definitely a worthwhile trip to the South Island! While I didn't really know what to look forward to during my visit to Nelson, I was nicely amazed as it was an interesting and vibrant town! It is the oldest town on the South Island and has a flourishing culture area.

Nelson is the right place for you if you want to discover the summit of the west coast. Some of the best things you can do in the South Island near by are the Abel Tasman National Park. It' maybe not the most popular place on the South Island, but it is one of the best you can visit!

Certainly I can say that Te Anau is one of the most scenic places I have ever been to. All over the globe, not just in New Zealand! The Te Anau is home to New Zealand's second biggest lakes and the view over it is just amazing! The Te Anau is the gate to Fiordland and the ideal place to settle.

Marlborough Sounds is without question one of the most wonderful places on the South Island. This makes it all the more irritating for me because this is one of the places I didn't come to when I was in New Zealand! These sounds are in the northeast of the South Island near Picton.

The Queen Charlotte Sound is perhaps the most beloved of the sound types, offering an unbelievable view of the ascending valley and rivers! Are you looking for one of the more curious places on the South Island, then you should visit Akaroa! Roads are named in French and some places are also named in French!

Only 84 km from Christchurch, Akaroa is an excellent place for a week-end! Fiordland National Park is the part of the South Island that is not inhabited, but perhaps the most wonderful! Fiordland is situated on the west coast of the island and is home to some of New Zealand's most dramatic landscapes.

Besides the Milford sounds there is also the doubtful sounds and many great hiking paths! Whatever you decide, you will be in an unbelievable view! When you wonder where you can spend the night on the South Island, you will be pleased to know that there are many accommodations! Practically everywhere you go, you'll find cheap accommodations!

Of course, it is more likely that you will find cheaper hotels on the South Island outside the major tourism area, although you can find cheaper accommodation in Queenstown, for example, even though it is full of them! One of the most important things to consider when planning a visit to New Zealand is the best amount of free travel you can make. This, because the wheather can be very different according to the visit! The South Island in cold winters is only recommended if you want to go downhill or snowboard. The Remarkables and Coronet Peak on the South Island are many resorts and they are great if you enjoy it.

Otherwise I would be avoiding a visit from May to September and a visit during the rest of the year. The South Island is usually quite warm in summers, although the climate can quickly get different. For the most part, you would consider a temperature above 20°C, although this will decline with increasing south!

Really it really does depend on what you want to do, but I would recommend going to the South Island in sommer! Limiting this to 17 was quite tricky as there are many great places to visit on the South Island.
