The Groupe Barrière runs canteens in France, Switzerland and other European countries. It is also active in the hotel, restaurant and recreation sectors in France. When a young man from Ardèche, who came to Paris at the beginning of the twentieth  century, François André began buying the Ostendino in Belgium, while Eugène Cornuché, his associate, began to build the Hôtel Normandie and rebuild the Deauvilleino in 1912.

François André founded Spielkreis Haussmann in Paris in 1918 and expanded his operations by creating the La Baule residence modelled on Deauville and buying the Hôtel Royal and the Royal Hotel and Casinò in 1923. His invention of the contemporary resorts was to combine canteens, luxurious restaurants and sport centres in one place.

François André took over the building of the Hôtel Hermitage in La Baule in 1926. In 1927 he took over the management of SHCD (Société des Hôtels et Casino de Deauville) from Eugène Cornuché. Then he had the Hôtel du Golf build in Deauville. Lucien Barrière, the grandson of François André, became a member of the group in 1951.

Lucien Barrière was named to the executive boards of several Group companies in 1957 and became the exclusive successor to his unicam. SHCLB (Société Hôtelière de la Chaîne Lucien Barrière) was established in 1980 to provide coverage for the La Baule hotel and casino facilities. Lucien Barrière took part in the 1987 games in France.

Diane Barrière-Desseigne followed her fathers Lucien Barrière in 1990 and started large renovations. In addition to their prestigious status, the properties are intimately linked to the movie and art industries. Normandy Barrière and the Royal Barrière are visited by the movie business elites during the American Movie Festival in Deauville.

Diane Barrière-Desseigne had a very serious aircraft crash in 1995 and from 1997 her husband Domique Disseigne headed SHCD and SHCLB at her side. SHCD acquired the Fouquet store and store in 1998. Elisabeth Barrière-Desseigne passed away in 2001. In the same year SHCD took over Ryads Resort Development, which later became the site on which the Hôtel Naoura Barrière in Marrakech (Morocco) was located. This was backed by high-ranking shareholders who acquired a share in Ryads Resort Development.

During 2004, the mutual fund Desseigne-Barrière, Accor and Colony Capital merged to form Société Hôtelière de la Chaîne Lucien Barrière, later to become Groupe Lucien Barrière, merging the operations of SHCD, SHCLB and Accor Casinos into a respected Group. In 2005, the company expanded with the opening of cafés in Toulouse, Cairo, Leucate, Blotzheim and Lille, the Naoura Barrière in Marrakech (Morocco), the Hôtel Fouquet's Barrière in Paris and the Spark (fitness center for treatment, sports and spa) in Enghien-les-Bains.

Hôtel Barrière Lille will open in the fall of 2010 and the hotel and balneotherapy center next to Casino Barrière de Ribeauvillé are expected to open at the end of 2011. In the same time, the Barrière Casinos in La Baule, Dinard, Deauville, Saint-Malo, Nice, Cassis and Saint Raphaël renovated their franchises, demonstrating their trust in the Group.

Colony Capital divested its shareholding in Groupe Lucien Barrière to Accor on 15 April 2009, which now owns 49% of the group. The Barrière comprises 18 establishments (16 in France, 1 in St Barth and 1 in Marrakech). The Barrière Hôtels, located in world-famous touristic centres, are extraordinary travelers.

Its top sites make Barriere a bench-mark in the Parisian hotel industry, with most rated as five-star as well. Its 37 canteens are situated in resort along the coastline of France and in the city. The Barriere Casino also offers a rich and delicious kitchen, a vibrant ambience and, above all, spacious and well-equipped rooms.

The Lucien Barrière Group has 131 pubs and restuarants in the Group's cafeterias and hotel establishments, ranging from snack to 5-star cuisines, as well as the Fouquet Brasserie in Paris, Toulouse and Marrakech.
