This city at the bottom of the lake is also known as Wanaka. The Lake Wanaka is located in the middle of the Otago Lakes on the lower south island of New Zealand. Located in a glacial pool on the shore of the lake, the Mt Aspiring National Park is a gate to the area.

The lake H?wea is 15 minutes away by car, on the way to the border city Makarora, the last stop before the West Coast Glacier area. The lake is 42 kilometers long in its largest extension, which lies about along a north-south axe. Wanaka and Albert City are located near the Clutha River drain.

The Wanaka area was a bottleneck for M?ori. Haast Pass allowed entry to the West Coast and its Ponamu; the Cardrona Valley lead to the Cardrona Nature Reserve Rocks "Whatatorere" which was the only place where the Kawarau River and the Clutha River / Mata-Au could be traversed without a boat.

6 ] Local cane was used to make vessels that allowed a quick trip back downstream to the eastern shore. Up until the early 19th centuries, Wanaka was frequented yearly by Ngai Tahu, who searched for punamu in the hills above the Haast River and in summers chased and returned to the eastern shore hunting wild water fish and bird by walking down the Clutha River / Mata-Au in canoes.

7 ] The use of the country by Ngai Tahu was ended by North Island assaults. In 1836 the Ngati Tama chieftain, Te Puoho, lead a 100-man military group, equipped with muscles, along the west coast and over the Haast Pass: They dropped to the Ngai Tahu camp between Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea, caught 10 men and killed and ate two orphans.

Although Te Puoho was later murdered by Tuhawaiki, the south Ngai Tahu chief. on a cloudy night. Wanaka has hosted many internationally acclaimed movies, among them The Lord of the Rings,[14], The Hobbit,[15], The Legend of S,[16] and A Wrinkle in Time.
