Its smaller dimensions with less than 2,000 travellers give Noordam an intense feeling that makes it easier to make new acquaintances and make new ones. In Alaska and New Zealand the pianobar was as rude as it could be, with cheerful singingalongs until noon. Aussie and New Zealand cruise ships are attracting a somewhat more vibrant audience, although the mood is still rather subdued.

The number of people in Noordam is quite amazing for such a small boat, which means that they rarely waited for those who don't want to take the steps. Like other HAL ships, some of the most striking and versatile works of art provide beautiful optical surprise throughout the entirehip. Historical photographs of HAL cruise ships from times long past go well with the vessel's tradition.

Noordam, the youngest of the four HAL Vista-class vessels of the early 2000s, shows some traces of use (separating wallcovering stitches, weary carpets in areas). However, the overall atmosphere makes the boat a good option for those who do not need water slides or zippers to find their luck at Sea. Holland America's passenger figures, at an avarage of 55 years, are slightly older than those of some large airlines.

Approximately 80 per cent of cruising on Alaska are over 50 years of age; approximately 40 per cent are over 65 years of age. On our last New Zealand to Australia trip, the times were older. Generally, Alaska catamaran trips and those taking place during summer vacations in Australia and New Zealand are attracting more people. But you will still find many different nations on board, with Americans, Canadians, New Zealanders and Australians accounting for the bulk of passengers.

Daywear is laid-back, but short and top s are not permitted in the refectories. As a rule, Alaska, Australia and New Zealand as well as the Pacific Islands are quite unofficial routes on Holland America. In the case of departures from Europe, the passenger tends to disguise himself more. A 15 per cent allowance is also granted for spas and cash tabas.
