Arrival of tourists in May despite closing of Boracay

ANNIVERSARY - Tourist arrival in the land rose in May in comparison with the prior months despite the closing of the Isle of Boracay, said the Ministry of Tourism Friday. Rodrigo Duterte ordered the world-famous seaside resort to be shut down for six months from the end of April so that the facilities could be improved and illicit infrastructures demolished.

Despite the closure of Boracay, 537,743 travellers came to the state in May, 0.94% more than in April, said Tourism Under Secretary Benito Bengzon, Jr. at a hotelier gathering in Makati. That is 10.24 per cent more than in the same timeframe in 2017. Bengzon said the Bengzon administration will rename Boracay and launch eco-infrastructural initiatives on the islands when it reopens on 26 October.

It was one of the top seaside resorts in the Philippines. By 2017, some 3.7 million people had flown to the Philippines, which is known for its pulverulent sandy shores, according to Philippine civil aviation authority poll.
