Waikiki Beach is an ever more sought after tourist resort for Australians and is usually the place for those looking for an eventful vacation in Hawaii. However, the great thing about Hawaii is that outside the busy metropolis there is a whole wide variety of people just asking to be discovered, and the small island of Kauai is the apex.

Kauai, known as Garden Island, is only 30 minutes from Honolulu. The Kauai and Honolulu are separated from each other. If you leave the light and busy Waikiki roads behind you, you will quickly get an impression of what a relaxing Kauai lifestyle really is like. It is a very relaxing place that is not only linked to its wonderful nature but also to the local people.

There is no better way for me to get to know a new travel target than through its story, as well as its cultural and above all its cuisine! I am delighted that we found all these insightful items in one beautiful place - Kilohana Estate and PLANTO. When we enter the site of the estate, we encounter a long, curvy ride leading us to the breathtaking Tudor Manor.

It is a farmhouse constructed in the 1930' s, and it is set in well-tended lawn and garden. However, that is what makes Kilohana Estate so unique in this historical building and what makes it so unique. On the way to the big building with its high, pointed roofs and the striking shingle track we were welcomed outside by the general director of the nursery, Fred Atkins.

We were welcomed by a big brown man, Fred, before he led us into the big building that now houses the Gaylord's and Mahiko Lounge. One of the restaurant's beverages is a particular Mai Tai made from the plantation's own cava. Situated in a beautiful setting, the restaurant's bars were a perfect match.

Elegantly but informally, I could see how I was still drinking some of these tasty beverages, but first Fred was offering us a site inspection, and I was anxious to enjoy the breathtaking view of the tropics. Fred, who comes from California, came to Kauai for a brief stay in the 1970'.

Fred fell in fond of Garden Island and remained where he is now, the famous garden, the celebrated dining room, the 42nd floor and the garden. Five acres of fruit trees, shrubs, gardens and willows. In Kilohana there is even a spectacular railway ride on a historical railway for those who want to experience the garden, orchard and Kauai landscape up-close and personal.

At Hawaii' sunset we head with Fred, our very own leader, to take a closer look at the bounties so affectionately maintained by Fred and the team. Much of the freshness of Gaylord's Restaurant and Mahiko Lounge comes directly from these areas.

Gaylord's, with its beautiful terraced location, has been voted one of the top 100 open-air venues in the USA. However, the main draw is the famous Luau Kalamaku, a dramatic story of Hawaiian legends and dancing, which is staged after a lavish festival for them. With one of my greatest desires on our Hawaii trip, to enjoy the local cuisine, while enjoying the sight and sound of the tiki - a significant dancing that is now equivalent to Hawaii; Luau Kalamaku has not disappointed.

In a dedicated area behind the building, the restaurant offers evening beverages and homemade sweets that will be enjoyed during a showause. Starting with a lavish supper, the guests enjoyed dishes such as potatoe, prepared in the subterranean stove, which contained juicy pig meat for us.

Further foodstuffs were lime jelly, yams, taro and lots of fruits. Obviously there was the tasty Mai Tai, as well as beers, wines and other beverages. Extravagant performance of Hwaiian tunes, drama, fire and stabbing. Kilohana means "not to be surpassed" in thehawaiian language.

If you are looking for an unforgettable Hawaii adventure, a trip to this beautiful Lauau and the estate is certainly impressive, because it really is a place that is second to none for its natural beauty, heritage and cultur.
