The Marquesas Islands

Most of the islands are high and rugged, with serrated summits up to 1,200 m high. Hiva Oa, the biggest (200 sq. km) and most populous of the southeast group, is the grave of Paul Gauguin and the Belgium vocalist Jacques Brel; the group also comprises the 60 sq. km large islands of the group, as well as the unpopulated Motane and the unpopulated Huku group.

France-Polynesia is a group of 118 islands that cover a large area of the southeast Pacific and are subdivided into five dispersed archipelagos: Society Islands, Marquesas Islands, Tuamotu Archipelago, Gambier Islands and the Tubuai Islands. Popularity is Papeete, Tahiti (Society Islands). There are volcanoes on the bigger islands with rich soils and thick flora.

There are many deep islands with corals. 1880 82 France conquered the islands and became part of its Oceania population. It also includes American Samoa, the Cook Islands, Niue, Pitcairn (famous for mutiny on the UK vessel HMS Bounty), Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu. It is said that the Marquesas were already lived in 340 BC.

In 1595 the south-eastern islands were spotted by the Spaniard who discovered them, Ivaro de Menda a de Neira, who gave them their name after his protector, the vice-king of Peru, Marques s de Mendoza. Fatu Haku, the first of the islands, was spotted on April 6 by sixteen-year-old Ensign Alexander Hood and mentioned by Capt. Hood's Isle. The next one was when the first gusting flight took place.

1791 the US naval commander Joseph Ingraham saw the north-western group and called it Washington Islands. All the group, annihilated by the locals in 1842, is now an administration division of Polynesia, based in Hakapehi (Tai-o-hae) on Nuku Hiva. As the islands are lacking coastline and shallow water bodies, the settlement is largely limited to the small valley where the creeks flow down from the rock.

Gauguin began his lifetime migrations between Polynesia and Paris in 1886, which often survived with little or no funds. The last two years of Paul Gauguin's career were spent on the Isle of Hiva Oa. Born on 8 May 1903, Gauguin was still in the cemetery of Calvary, Marquesas Islands, France.

The most flamboyant fantasy has never conceived a fiercer or more exciting carrier than that of a seaman who came to this harbour in iron last weekend and has since been so calmly accommodated in a guesthouse on Cherry St, although he had never exerted unpolluted control over tens of thousand bloody Cannibals.

In spite of his sinister Cannibal Jack name, he claims that he has never tried man meat, although his wild Marquesa themes enjoy it every time! But I can't rescue any indigenous people. That' s where a man called Butcher was chieftain when Jack first arrived, and the butcher's cranium is still there. There, Jack rules in bare and local honor, with his tapa belt and feathers. He has fourteen women in one home, among many others on other islands. There, he makes rules for two thousand island dwellers and is planning attacks on the wild of Dominica, another of the Marquesas Islands, with whose indigenous people he is constantly at war. 2,000 of them have been killed in the last years.

Jack, who had found his clothes, ran away with the 12-year-old young woman who was found in a raft, tied up and abandoned. It was Jack who slid down, took the weapon and pointed it at the indigenous man who was drowning from the man who had died the previous morning to save his name.

Trying to cross the cities of his foes to get to a part of the isle that was kind to him, he tripped into a "taboo ground" or graveyard, a place full of heads that walked around and nodded each other in the most unusual way, and the investigation revealed that each head was rented by a young shrimp of the kind the locals named oo-oo.

Apparently Jack is a believer, does not vow and enjoys taking part in the worship services. However, he does not like the presence of a missionary, and will not allow it on his own land, explaining that Father Damon in Honolulu and Mr Brown on one of the Navigator Islands are the only ones who have done the locals a great deal of good.

A Boston traveler who was helping to found the first paper in the sandwich islands fourteen years ago asked Jack $700 if he would come back to Boston with him and tell his tale in detail so that a novel could be made out of it. But now that Jack wants to make some cash, he is willing to take such a proposal.

In a few get-togethers he plans to go to New Bedford in a few get-togethers to see certain whalers of his friends he is expecting to find there and is hoping to get enough money to buy some utensils, munitions and "old papers with tales in them" to take with him; because next November he will undoubtedly find him far on his way to his archipelago as he explains that in this cool weather he would not be spending a whole New York winters for half the town!

" "Canibal Jack " or "Walking Geography" or "Jerry Daly", as he is differently known, has a wonderful mind, and a thorough study of his story shows that about 35 years ago there was a hard little guy living in Rochester who was the youngest boy of an US mother of four youngsters.

It was this distinguished young lady who sent him to college and put him to work so loyally as he cut him off, as he often did, that at the young ages of nine he ran away and found his way across the state of York to Mystic, on Long Island Sound. When he arrived in the harbour of France, he immediately ran away so that the captain, who had learnt his history, would not return him to Rochester.

He was very angry and returned to land; but the Kumpel-Anil team was on the side of the little man who had so bravely grabbed the ropes that they abandoned the protector in a corpse, and the skipper had no small difficulty getting it back. On the second one he crawled carefully aboard and slipped into his mooring when the master summoned him into the stateroom, put him with nothing but his shirts on the locker, taught him roundish about the foolishness of walking away and eventually locked him up in the empty cargo bay until midday the next time.

"He should better come into conflict with some of these men who are too proud to do their duty," Jack replied.

To make this unbiased comment, the master has chained him. The angry skipper started beating him with his list. It was Jack who defied, the joiner (the strongest man in the ship) flying to the captain's rescue. The man with the gun in his hands showed up at the crime site, and Jack agreed to be cuffed.

Strangely, a man Jack got to know last summers in San Francisco has since come to New York by land and has become the owner of a sailor's pension. That man and Jack recognised each other, and the "King of the Cannibal Islands" is at that instant a visitor of his former friend on Cherry St..

Even stranger is that the buddy who was brought on land at Mazatlan is also in New York to sue the skipper for compensation. And most inquisitively, in the next pension, an old sailor who saw Jack more than thirty years ago in the Gulf of Naples and clearly took to the little US boys on the Fruit!

There' s no question that Jack is responsible for the rebellion in the state prison, but it is quite certain that the case will be peacefully compromise and that no one will take action against him next Tuesday, the date on which his investigation will take place. He would find it difficult to find any witness under the garrison who are on his heels because of his general wickedness, and especially because they brought them to the seas with such a small amount of poorly eaten that they had to plead for supplies from ships as they passed to save themselves from starvation during the last part of the journey!

Jack has even been repentant to Jack for offering cash to make up for his own part of the affair, and no one can question that five-week imprisonment in a jail barely half his own size is enough to punish his doom. {\a6}Un seul maître d'art est parti à Marquessa, dit Traveler.

There' s only one "Tahuva" (master tattoo artist) on the Marquesas Islands, where a single culture ago they were the most abundant and skilled of all craftsmen, says Dr. Ralph Linton, archaeology aide at the Bishop's Musem in Honolulu, who has just spent ten month back in the South Pacific for research and research.

Out of all the things he saw in the Marquesas, the wonderful tattoos of the locals was one of the most interesting. Marquesas Island vegetation proves that the Poleynesian breed came from Southeast Asia to its present homes on the Pacific Islands, says Forrest Brown, the Bishop's Museo Botanico, who has just come back from a 17-month study in the Marquesas in the context of the museum's efforts to determine the origins of the Polynesians.

In the Marquesas, the appearance of the yam and papaya lead Professor Brown to the hypothesis that the Marquesas Aemrica were visiting, as these crops were probably grown in semitropical Central America. However, the most frequent Marquesas alimentary crops came from Southeast Asia, probably via Malaysia, Java and India.

Prof Brown said that the indigenous Polynesians probably lived on the shores of Southeast Asia and were compelled to look for new houses in the Paciifc by the pressures of trunks and internal forces that pushed them into the sea, as it were.
