Both Tevita and Carolyn Fotofili (and Moana's daughter) run Moana's guest house near the town of Sawana on the Isle of Vanua Balavu, 300 kilometres 300 kilometres eastwards of Fiji's capitol Suva. The Vanua Balavu is located on the northern Lau Islands - one of the least frequented archipelagos in Fiji.

This is a 15 minute stroll from the town. Moana's accommodation costs F$95 per child per night at half board (for under 12s ), includes three savoury lunches, refreshments and teas. Moana seaside cottages are a favourite with those who want to enjoy the outdoors. Desserts of chocolate and cake are offered for several evenings, while Moana's Guest House offers motor boat excursions to the picturesque Bay of Islands or yachting in a Fiji Outcanoe.

On Vanua Balavu, only Fiji currencies are acceptable in the form of money (no travelers checks or bank cards). The Vanua Balavu is the most open of the vast Lau Group, which crosses the border between Polynesia and Melanesia. It is a long, tortuous islet with raised corals in the northern and vulcanic land forms in the souther.

It is best to explore the offshore calcareous rocks on the northern side of the mainland by sea. An immense Laguna bordered by a 130 km long barriere coral cliff stretches eastward of Vanua Balavu Iceland. In 1840, Commodore Charles Wilkes of the American Exploring Expedition named Vanua Balavu and the neighbouring Isles the Exploring Isles.

During the nineteenth centuary, sailboats often anchored between Tonga and Fiji off Vanua Balavu. Ma'afu's Lau Confederation soon dominated much of Fiji's East, allegedly to foster the proliferation of Christianity. When Fiji became a UK settlement in 1874, the economy of Vanua Balavu disappeared and the country has not seen much change in the last hundred years.

There are only a few shops in the town. Vanua Balavu summarizes the term untouched. Fiji Pacific Sun operates a weekly flight from Suva to Vanua Balavu. There is a return ticket at F$414 and it is also possible to get there with the Sea Link, a service ship that departs every few short blocks from Suva.

Suilven, the much bigger auto-ship, runs once a months between Taveuni and Vanua Balavu. When you own your own boat, there is a good mooring here. It takes some hard work to get a personal boat to Vanua Balavu, and the people at the Royal Suva Yachting Club are used to the experience.

Samoa or Tonga boats must pass Fiji Customs in Suva, Levuka, Savusavu or Lautoka before they call at Vanua Balavu.
