Back of an early 1900s Scotch apartment house, the Lower East Side Tenement is a five-storey former Manhattan apartment house, a National Historic Site, a dedicated to apartment buildings on the Lower East Side. In Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland, rental apartments make up a large part of the population.
The Glasgow apartment buildings were constructed to offer high residential densities to the large number of immigrants to the town in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a consequence of the industrial revolution, as the town' s inhabitants grew to more than one million in number. Edinburgh's apartment buildings are much older, they date from the seventeenth and some were up to 15 stories high when they were first constructed, making them the highest buildings in the whole wide range at that age.
23 ] As a rule, Glasgow apartment blocks were not erected higher than the width of the road they were on, so most of them are about 3-5 stories high. Almost all Glasgow apartment houses are made of unmistakable blond or reddish sandstein. Much of the apartment blocks in Edinburgh and Glasgow were torn down in the 1960' and 1970' due to slums, congestion and mismanagement.
The most conspicuous case is perhaps the Gorbals quarter in Glasgow, where almost all apartment buildings were torn down to make room for high-rise buildings, which in turn were torn down and substituted by newer one. Gorbals are a relatively small area where an estimated 90,000 inhabitants once lived, resulting in very bad livelihoods; today there are about 10,000 of them.
But the many tenement buildings that remain in different areas of both towns are becoming increasingly popular again due to their large rooms, high ceiling and adornment. Glasgow and Edinburgh are still ruled by nineteenth centurys apartment buildings, and most of the precious objects to the east of Glasgow are apartment buildings.
Buenos Aires' so-called convenience stores were constructed from one- or two-storey homes around inner courts for wealthy households. Earmarked apartment blocks photocopied their shape. Usually they are four to five-storey building with 10 to 20 holis (tenements) on each level, whereby verbatim they mean "rooms". It is a common room that can be used as a bedroom and lounge as well as a fully equipped canteen.
