Almost 100 km from Auckland, but still in Hauraki Gulf, Great Barrier Island is New Zealand's 4th biggest island in the principal range (behind the North, South and Stewart Islands). Great Barrier Island is known for its remote coves, which are among the best dive sites in New Zealand.

You have several ways to get to Great Barrier Island. As soon as you are on the island, you must either rent a vehicle or organise a transfer between your destination. There are few cities on Great Barrier Island, and there are one or two guesthouses at each location. Most of these guesthouses are traditionally backpackers and most of them have a large outside area as they are located on a (mostly) tropic island.

Here you will find a whole range of "long-term travellers", backpackers who work in the city and have a career. Especially in summers you should definitely make a reservation before you leave for the island, because you don't want to get off here and you don't have a place to spend the night on a bustling working-end!

On the western side of the island, sheltered from the rugged South Pacific sea, you will find great snorkeling and dive opportunities. On the eastern side there are long sandy areas, stomping waves (perfect for surfing!) and high rocks with great outlooks. In the interior there are miles of footpaths that connect the path across the island.

You will see a multitude of indigenous bird and gamelife, hike through the thick indigenous shrub and be awarded with concealed warm water sources or unbelievable vistas over the island and the Hauraki Gulf from the top of Hirakimata.
