The Fenton Lake State Park

The Fenton Lake State is a gentle hilly landscape with a lake for angling and canoes. It is also an attraction for camper, hiker and cross-country skier. From autumn to early in the year, the lake is filled with trouts and is home to brook trouts from Germany. Though most fishermen enjoy the warm and comfortable climate of summers, there is also icefishing in winters.

IMPORTANT: Due to the risk of fire and the closing of the Santa Fe National Forest, this reserve is currently inactive. Lake Fenton

Fenton Lake State is a year-round sanctuary set in magnificent pinewoods and offers a cross-country skiing track, a bi-athlon track and handicapped fishingwalk. Before Fenton Lake became a state reserve, it was acquired by State Game and Fish as a sanctuary for migrating water birds and other game.

Today you can still see more than a droplet of ducks, water birds, turkeys, stags, muskrats, moose and bobcats.

Hidden in the Jemez Mountains in the northwest of New Mexico, small Fenton Lake offers a lot of leisure activities in the area. Fenton Lake, less than 40 mornings tall, is known by happy New Mexico camper and fishermen who come here to go camping, fishing, biking, hiking and game.

Just 70 leagues to the north-west of Albuquerque, Fenton Lake is a paradise for kayak and birdwatching enthusiasts within a few hour. Like many open-air attractions, taking the Jemez Mountain Trail National Byway is a good way to go! Fenton Lake has a great deal to offer for a small artificial lake.

This lake is frequently occupied by trouts, while the local brook fishable brook fish also lands in the lake of Rio Cebolla. Seven Springs Fish Hatchery also occasionally supplies the lake with Rio Grande Cuttlefish. There is a small boating platform, but only electrical engines are permitted on the lake.

The majority of fishers find it just as simple to go canoeing, kayaking or even floating. On the State Park's website it says that icefishing is forbidden. The campsite at Fenton Lake State Parc is located in the shade of the Ponderosa pinewood and is rural, roomy and quiet. Planned events several days a year attract additional guests to the State Parks for adventurous racing, as well as the National Hunting and Angling Day.

For the remainder of the year, the campsite is a haven for those who love the natural environment and enjoys the paths, footpaths and game. Near the campsite, the Hall Baxter Trail begins just south of the lake and crosses a two-and-a-half mile long storage area.

There is a large populated reserve of migratory and aquatic species of migratory and aquatic species. Campsite' dirt tracks promote low speed and are perfect for mountaineers. The Fenton Lake is conveniently situated on the Jemez Mountains Trail National Scene Byway. Byway leads past several of nature's warm water sources, the Gilman Tunnel, drilled many years ago to ease deforestation; the Soda Embankment, which is not really a dyke, but a form of mineral formations from sediments of warm water sources that are blocking the Jemez River; Seven Spring's Fish Hatchery, where even children can capture a fish; and Battleship Rock, a steep rock that looks like the bow of a sea.

Pass Jemez Pueblo and Red Rocks with the small village of Walatowa, where more than 3400 residents of this small tribal land are selling livelihoods, India's toucos and local craft. Further attractions are Jemez Springs and Bath House, Tent Rocks National Monument, Bandelier National Monument and Valles Caldera National Preserve.

Along the whole path the beautiful landscape of the Jemez Mountains and its geologic formation can be seen in breathtaking colours. It' s not clear when Fenton Lake was founded. The lake was built by a barrage on the Rio Cebolla, the name of a former rancher-owner of the area. Initially bought by the New Mexico Division of the game and Fish as a nest and rest area for migrating birds, cascades the entire area within the boundaries of the 1. 6 million acres of Santa Fe National Forest.

More than 700 hectares of the lake's surroundings were later allocated to Fenton Lake State Park. Fenton Lake is now part of the US Forest Service and the Department of Game and Fish, but is administered by the New Mexico State Parks Division. In 1989, a law permitted the dredge of the small lake, but trials showed that the dredge itself would harm the lake's wellbeing. In 2014, a fire in the vicinity of the lake again led to increased silting up. There is still no clear solution to this issue, but the aim is to rescue the lake again.

Accommodation is not available on the lake or in the nearby parks except for the campsite. Rucksack campsites are also available in many areas of the Santa Fe National Forest. A number of business hotels and guesthouses are located on the major streets around Fenton Lake, and some of the local residences let their property on a weekly basis.

Larger towns such as San Ysidro, Bernalillo, White Rock, Los Alamos and Jemez Spring have properties, hotel accommodation, Motel and B&Bs, as well as a wide range of dining and retail outlets.
