: Polynesians inhabited the isle in the fourth c.. Whilst the isle was spotted by former researchers, James Cook brought the first group of Europeans to the isle in 1777. Bora Bora was appointed protector of France in 1842. In World War II, after the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Bora Bora was selected by the United States as a South Pacific Army Air Force bases, and an airfield, sea plane bases and defense facilities were built.

It was not fought, however, as the US military outreach to Bora Bora was unchallenged during the course of the conflict. Even though the station was formally shut down on June 2, 1946, so many Americans were in love with the islands and the population that they declined to abandon them. As a result of the runway's evolution during World War II, Bora Bora was the only French Polynesian intercontinental airfield until Faa'a was opened in Papeete, Tahiti in 1962.

Bora Bora Bora Bora's runway has never been able to house large airplanes. Nowadays, the main dependence of the islands is on the tourist industry.
