The city of Santiago contains impressive remnants of its former empire and ultra-modern skyscrapers. There is a busy commercial area, next to a boulevard of peddlers and craftsmen who sell their goods. Ever since its invention on Easter Sunday 1722 by Nederlands Admiral Jacob Roggeveen, this solitary area with its huge, enigmatic pre-historic monument collections has been the subject of intensive discussion.

Sculpted from thick vulcanic tufa, the high and extremely weighty sculptures of the island were carried kilometres to the shore and placed on large rock-alteries named Ahu.
