Valais Uvea

This is Samuel Wallis, known as Wallis Island. This is the largest island in the territory of the Wallis and Futuna Islands, located on the eastern side of the archipelago. Valais Islands, Îles Wallis, group of one major group of islands and about 20 islands that make up the north-eastern part of the Wallis and Futuna community in the western Pacific Ocean. This group consists of the Uvea Islands (not to be mistaken for Ouvéa in New Caledonia, also known as Valais Island) and the ring of islands with corals.

At least 800 BC is the oldest proof of the colonization of Uvea. In prehistoric history, the Tongeren people occupy the entire archaeology of Talietumu, a Tongan walled village dating back to around 1450. In 1767 the Isles were frequented by the captain Samuel Wallis and in 1842 by the French.

In 1887 they became the protectorates of France and after a 1959 referenda they became part of the Wallis and Futuna territories (from 2007: collective overseas). As well as being administered by the French-led Wallis and Futuna governments (including a local legislative ), the island is governed by a sovereign who exerts restricted authority.

There are small and low islands with reefs. Uvea, however, is 30 mile (. 50 km) in perimeter and climbs to Mount Lulu Fakahega at 476 ft (145 meters). It has an Hihifo internatonal airfield in the northern part of the country, an extended road network and harbours in Matâ'utu, the city.

The New Zealand and Wallis and Futuna territories have few formal contacts, but good ship connections between the two means that New Zealand exports have a powerful foothold in this small town. In addition to the three major isles, Wallis and Futuna have 20 small isles and a surface area of 274 sqkm.

Valais and Futuna is an "overseas community" of France. The islands of Uvea (Wallis Island), Sigave (Futuna Island) and Alo (Alofi Island). Valais and Futuna are highly reliant on France. A lot of Wallis and Futuna citizens, especially the 18-30 year olds, move to New Caledonia to have better job opportunities. Wallis and Futuna is a small New Zealand exporters, but our good ship connections mean that our exports are well represented there.

The New Zealand relief work in Wallis and Futuna focuses on learning, with short-term grants for teaching and learning languages, as well as providing engineering and internships. Funds are managed by the New Zealand Consulate General in New Caledonia, which also administers a humble assistance program for the French Pacific (Wallis and Futuna, French Polynesia and New Caledonia).
