It is not really an isle, but is accessed via a small dam from Chesil Beach. Portland's renowned stone, which was mined here, was used for many well-known structures. Most of the mines here are in the possession of the Krone, as Portland is a Royal Manor. Whitehall Cenotaph itself is also Portland Stone.
There' s proof that the Portland invasion goes back several thousand years. The name Vindilis was given by the Romans and there are indications of consecutive colonies on the isle. That' because the hostile Portlanders threw rocks to keep foreigners away. The Portland Castle was erected in 1539 in Castletown after French aggression.
{\Only there was another fort across the street, at Sandsfoot in Wyke Regis, but that's a mess now. It overlooks the port of Portland and was erected by Henry VIII to protect Weymouth from further invasions from France and Spain. It is a protected place with a spectacular view of the ocean and the docks.
For almost three hundred years there has been a light house at the south tip of the archipelago to alert ships crossing the English Channel.

Not only is this the first attempt of the Norwegian Breakaway to Portland but it is also the biggest boat that has ever called at Portland as well.
Portland has formally signed the rental agreement with Inter Marine UK Limited on January 9, 2018, which will now be headquartered at the docks. In total, the harbour is expected to see 32 liner vessels carrying almost 39,000 people.
