Sire Laval - Celebrations in Mauritius

During the whole of September, but especially on 9 September, the day of the deaths of Father Jacques Desire Laval (known here as Père Laval), the priests gathered at the tomb of the Reverend in Ste Croix. Laval was borne in France in 1803 and grew up in a severe spiritual environment, where he qualified as a physician before becoming a clergyman.

He came to Mauritius as a missionsary in 1841 and transformed tens of thousands of recently liberated servants into Catholics and became known as the Black Apostles. Acknowledged by the Vatican and revered by adherents of all denominations, he is considered the "national saint" of Mauritius, who ascribes wonderful curative properties to his name.

Mauritius is now a Commonwealth country with 1.2 million inhabitants.
