Stewart Island Tokoeka is the largest of the kiwi. The tokoeka Stewart Island are a sturdy round bird and although kiwi are usually lonely, they are quite common as a couple. Here is a page to celebrate one of New Zealand's unique Kiwi varieties. The southern brown kiwis live on South Island and Stewart Island. I'm spending an evening finding the legendary Stewart Island Kiwi.

While cruising you will cross Ulva Island (a predator-free protected area) and get to know the wealthy Iceland. It takes about 45 min. and the trail continues to Ocean Beaches. It is a broad sand dunes where kiwis often eat between grass and algae. In the dark you can see the dark kiwi (Rakiura Tokoeka) - often looking for shelter.

Departure and arrival schedules depend on sundown, weathers and kiwi behavior. An adequate degree of physical condition is necessary (total walk about 2 hrs according to Kiwi behaviour).

The Stewart Island Tokyoeka are sturdy round poultry and one of the biggest varieties of tropical kiwi, with female weight over 4 kg. Tookoeka means "weka with cane" and refers to its long bill.

The Tokoeka are a kind of taeonga (a nature resource and much appreciated) for Rakiura Maori. Kiwi rely on a sophisticated olfactory and tactile senses, not on vision. Kiwi is the only one in the whole wide body with outer nose holes at the tip of its jaw. Kiwis knock their beaks on the floor to find vertebrates or other invertebrate animals under the floor.

Kiwis are omnivorous. Kiwis are exposed to three types of threats: carnivores, extinction and human being.

Stewart Island Kiwi have a sound populace of about 15,000 inhabitants. Kiwis are found on North Island, South Island and Stewart Island, and there are five different sorts. Heavier kiwi, the female weighs about 3.5 kg and the male about 2.5 kg. They are only the second most important of the Great-Spotted Kiwi on the South Island.

Kiwis are found throughout Stewart Island, from ocean levels to the peaks of the Alps, but some areas are more prolific in nutrition. Kiwis are sometimes seen in the only Oban hamlet, but there are few and rare sightings. However, the kiwis are rarely seen. The best way to see a kiwi is to walk the back country paths (fit and active) and/or participate in a guided kiwi-spotted trip.

To see a kiwi during the day is a unique day.
