Choose your island group first
Begin with the place that interests you most. Comparing French Polynesia with Samoa is a different decision from comparing Moorea with Huahine. The first choice changes your international route; the second shapes a journey within a group.
Write down the reason for every extra stop. A different landscape, a local-led experience or time with family can justify a transfer. Another name on a list often cannot.
Build the route around real connections
Check operating days before committing to accommodation. A domestic flight or ferry may not line up with your international arrival, and the place where a boat docks can be far from your room.
| Check | Why it changes the plan |
|---|---|
| Actual operating day | A connection may not run every day. |
| Airport or harbour transfer | The arrival point is not always the overnight base. |
| Separate tickets | A missed connection may not be protected. |
| Calendar date | The International Date Line can change the arrival day. |
| Final night | A buffer near your departure airport gives more room. |
French Polynesia illustrates why this matters: Tahiti and Moorea have frequent boat links, while other islands involve different air or sea connections. Use Tahiti Tourisme’s transport overview as a starting point and confirm the current service with the operator.
Before you book
- Check entry requirements for your passport and every jurisdiction on the route.
- Compare the complete cost, including domestic transport, baggage and transfers.
- Confirm Sunday and holiday arrangements with your hosts.
- Check current weather, access and official travel advice for each destination.
- Leave a margin for disruption before the journey home.
