Pitman also founded the woodcarving section at the School of Design, which was loved by the female overcoat.

Though both Pitman and the Frys hugged the aesthetic movement, the Frys were business people, while Pitman favored doctrine and the teach. For Longworth, this is shown in the coat that the Frys engraved with a vine design in honour of Nicholas Longworth, who launched viticulture in the United States.

"Many of the woodcarvings contain tendrils, sheets and geometrical edges. Once aroused, the wish for artfully crafted furnishings seemed inexhaustible. Females began to see carving as a profitable occupation and as an alternatives to school. This is the beginning of a new period for them, which clearly and truly defines the feminist dictates.

From the early 1870s to the end of the 20s, only about 5,000 to 10,000 sculptures were made. Since the woodcarvers were their own customers, only a few of them were sold.
