Leeward Islands are marked on the right centre of the map..... Leeward Islands is a group of islands located where the north-eastern Caribbean meet the west Atlantic Ocean. They begin on a map with the Virgin Islands eastward of Puerto Rico and extend to the south eastern part of Dominica. The English word Leeward Islands is used to refer to the Lesser Antilles' north islands.
More to the south of this range, beginning with Martinique, is Windward Islands. This archipelago, known as the Lévard Islands, was named after earlier times when sailboats were the only means of transport across the Atlantic. The term "windward" in sail terms means in the opposite sense of the word "windward".
Therefore, an isle in the northeast, like Puerto Rico, usually Lee of an isle in the south east, like Antigua, and vice versa, Antigua would normally be windward of Puerto Rico, but Lee of Guadeloupe and Martinique. Early Spaniards named Puerto Rico and the islands in the western part Sotavento, which means Leather.
At that time the islands of Puerto Rico to the southeast and eastward were known as Islas de Barlovento, which means "islands under the wind". At the time the Brits took over many of the Lesser Antilles, they described Antigua, Montserrat and the northern islands as "Leeward Islands". The Windward Islands were known as Guadeloupe and the islands in the southern part of the country.
Later, all islands in the northern part of Martinique became known as Leeward Islands. 1 ] So Dominica is the most southern Leeward Islands. But also in non-English tongues, e.g. Hispanic, Frensh and Dutch, all the Lesser Antilles from the Virgin Islands to Trinidad and Tobago are known as Windward Islands (Iles au Vent in Frensh, Bovenwinds Eilanden in Dutch and Islas de Barlovento in Spanish).
Leeward Antilles, other than English, are the islands along the coastline of Venezuela, known in English as the Leeward Islands. Islands are affected by volcanic activity and Montserrat experienced significant volcanic activity in the 1990' and 2009-2010. These islands were among the first parts of America to come under the Spanish Empire's rule.
Contacts with Europe began with Christopher Columbus' second journey, and many of the islands' name dates from this time, e.g. Montserrat was given its name in honor of Santa Maria de Montserrat (Our Lady of Montserrat) after the Holy Virgin of the Monastery of Montserrat, situated on Mount Montserrat, the Catalonia sanctuary of the nation.
In 1671 the Leeward Islands became a royal settlement. Christopher Codrington became Leeward Islands governor in 1699, before the War of Spanish Succession. From 1706 to 1710 Daniel Parke II was Leeward Islands King. 1816 the settlement was closed, the last gouverneur was James Leith.
Between 1833 and 1871, the Governor of Antigua was Governor of the Leeward Islands. Nowadays the islands are ruled by a number of different governments, both nationally and colonially.
