Macquarie Island's rabbit and rodent extermination program was successfully launched in April 2014. It was the world's biggest island extinction of these three endemic bird populations at once. Macquarie Island was designated a World Heritage Site on December 3, 1997 - Tasmania's second World Heritage Site.
The Macquarie Island is a place of exceptional geographical and environmental importance on a global level. It is one of the few islands in the Pacific Ocean where the wildlife of the area is able to nest. Approximately 3.5 million sea birds and 80,000 bull seal species come to Macquarie Island every year to reproduce and mate.
