Floods in Samoa's capital by strong rainfall

One of the highways in the Samoan capital is inundated and the villagers are said to be on standby, as strong rains and storms hit the isles. Deputy Director General of Samoa Lameko Talia says a torrential rains alarm was given at 4am this mornings.

Said the capital's major street, Apia, was submerged and blocked westerners. "We' ve told the humans to be vigilant, especially when they're on the streets. The Lameko Talia said that the strong rains would subside in the morning afternoons.

Samoa earthquakes cause tsunami

A major underwater tremor near Samoa on the early mornings of 29 September 2009 caused a devastating tidal wave that struck more than 100 deaths. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the 8.0 level tremor at 6:48 a.m. about 200 kilometres southwards of Apia, the capital of Samoa.

According to the USGS, the tidal wave in Apia affected the Savi'i, Upola and Tutuila Isles a few moments later with 3.1 meter high shafts near Pago Pago (American Samoa) and 1.4 meter (4.6 feet). Minor tidal wave strikes affected other Asian countries further away from the epicentre of the tremor. The picture shows the position of the seismic event in comparison to the isles.

Seismic epicentre, represented by a large dark circular arc, was on the Pacific ocean tectonical plane near the Australian plane border (southwestern part of the map). The first quake, which lasted until at least September 30, was followed by tens of 4 and 5 level afterquakes, represented by open orbits. Tonga Trench, a shallow cliff at the rim of the Pacific plateau, is the knee-shaped area of deeper sands.

As the Pacific Plate wanders west, it sinks under a complicated row of smaller slabs at the rim of the Australian Plate, the flatter area in the lower lefthand area. According to the USGS, the Tonga Graben area is one of the most dynamic seismic areas in the word.
