Historical walks & rides on Norfolk Island
The Norfolk Island has a colourful story with an unimaginable heritage of ferocity and bloody events. Kingston (Norfolk's Capital) Precinct at the south end of Norfolk is the most important historical place on the island. In Kingston the first prisoner colony arrived and the building of houses and streets began.
Exit Burnt Pine via Ferny Lane (sometimes also known as Peter's Highway) and continue around the airfield until you get to Country Road. Take a turn to your right, continue for 100 meters and drive along Beefsteak Road. Just a stone's throw to the right is Longridge House, which is well deserved a stop for a dinner or a cup of Devonian teas, or to revive the way Norfolk used to be.
Back to Country Road, turn right and after about a minutes you will reach Watermill Dam on the right. Coming to the solid wall of the Commissariat Store, turn right. We will return to this area, but for now just take Pier Street to the dock and let your thoughts wander until 1856, when 194 Pitcairners saw their new home.
They can have their lunches at the Royal Engineers' Office near the jetty). You will soon be able to see the voice of the convicted coalmine workers trying to construct these beautiful lime stone structures they mined from Point Hunter or Nepean Island. Norfolk is weaving such a cheerful magic that you will find yourself in his dark past without a jerking feeling of shocks, not quite thinking that such a paradise could ever have been such a hell.
Like the horrible crankmill (now without a roof), the wall of the notorious pentagon jail and its disgusting clinic are still standing under whose ground, it is said, several hundred artefacts are hidden waiting to be disinterred. We are greeted by the Pier Store and the Royal Engineers Office, now a museum. At the end of the Slaughter Bay jail wall, you will see the sticker reminiscent of the sad end of the First Fleet flag ship and near the Sirius Museum.
Return to the Commissariat's shop and circumnavigate the old and new military barracks, whose solid ramparts and tower corners have been constructed to resist any prisoner commotion. During the relentless one-eyed Scotsman Major Anderson, whom they named "Potato Joe", constructed this viaduct by replacing potato with loaves of loaves in the convict's carton.
It is a very beautiful little viaduct - the designers had an eyes for ageless charm, a sophistication that was undoubtedly forgotten by the unfortunate demons who made it. Drive on Driver Christian Road to Collins Head Road, which will take you back to Burnt Pine.
