Wangaparapara was in the industrial centre on Great Barrier Island for mining, woodworking and whaling. Oreville punch mixer is still a striking symbol of Whangaparapara Road. Kauri Timber Company's saw mill was located in Whangaparapara and was processing Coromandel and Northland trunks at the beginning of the 20th century. You can also see the remnants of New Zealand's last fishing post on the north side of Whangaparapara Harbour, which was in operation from 1957 to 1962.
