Kwai Sailing Ship - Kiritimati Island

Kiritimati, also known as Christmas Island, but not to be mistaken for Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean, is a Pacific doll on the North Line Islands and part of the Republic of Kiribati. It has the largest surface of all atolls of corals in the world: 642 sqkm.

It covers over 70% of the entire territory of Kiribati, a country comprising 33 Pacific atlls. It is 105 sea leagues just off the coast. Approximately 200 northeastern of Jarvis, 153 southeastern of the city of Jarvis, 238 southeastern of Washington Island, 357 southeastern of Palmyra and 1160 sea-mile southwest of Honolulu.

Actually, it is a rather simple translation of "Christmas" in the words like " ti " and " KEE-riss-ee-mass " in the words of William von Goethe. "The gilbertesis I have been reading is a Micronese tongue, although our colleague Mr Itiniwa is telling me that its tongue has developed over the years and is no longer strict Mictonese.

Kiribati Republic, with a surface area of about 5 million km2, consists of three different island groups: Gilbert Group (Kiribati): 16 Isles or Atlls, as well as Banaba (Ocean Island) is located about 400 kilometres southwest of Tarawa, the capital of the Republic of Kiribati.

Lineage Island, (Northern Equatorial Islands): There are eight islets 2400 kilometres eastwards of Kiribati, including Kiritimati (Christmas Island, the biggest christmas island in the world), Tabuaeran (Fanning Island) and Caroline Island (Millennium Island), which were the first to welcome the beginning of the new millenium.

About the Phoenix Group: There are eight archipelagos, 1120 kilometres of E.S.E. from Kiribati, including Canton Island (Canton) and Hull Island (Orona). Kiribati's natives are Gilberteses, a Micronese nation. About 90% of Kiribati's total populace live on the Gilbert atheists. Though the Lineage islets are located about 2,000 nautical mile to the eastern side of the Gilbert Isla. Most of the residents of the Lineage islets are also Gilbert.

Due to the heavy overpopulation in the South Tarawan capitol in the 1990' s, a programme of targeted migrations has brought almost 5,000 people to remote islands, especially the liner islands. Phoenix Islands have never had a significant long-term resident populace. In the 1930s, a UK attempt to locate Gilbertese there continued until the 60s, when it was discovered that the residents could not be self-sufficient.

Between 1000 and 1300 AD, the I-Kiribati colonized the so-called Gilbert Islands. It was rediscovered on 24 December 1777 by Captain James Cook in the boats Resolution and Discover. "Because we spent our Christmas here, I named this find "Christmas Island." "So much advertising resulted from Cook's report that many whaling boats and other boats came to the island in quest of secure anchorages, food and landings for tired missions.

The Gilbert and Ellice Islands (now the island of Ellice is the sovereign land of Tuvalu) agreed in 1892 to become Protectorate of the United Kingdom in an attempt to re-establish a certain order. The Banaba (Ocean Island) was annihilated in 1900 after the discoveries of phosphate-rich guanos, and the whole group was declared a UK settlement in 1916.

Over the next 20 years, the Line and the Phoenix Isles were integrated piece by piece. During the Second World War, Japan conquered some of the island. By November 1943, US troops attacked strongly defended Japan' s position on the Tarawa atoll in the Gilberts, leading to some of the most bloody battles in the Pacific War.

It was a turning point for the Central Pacific Wars. The United Kingdom began to expand self-government on the island in the sixties. The Ellice Islanders parted from the settlement in 1975 and proclaimed autonomy in 1978. In 1977 the Gilberts were given autonomy internally and on 12 July 1979 they became an autonomous country under the name of Kiribati.

The year 1865 saw the British transfer the Christmas Island to the Anglo-Australian firm Guano Co. In 1866 the island was frequented by the company's ship, Marie Louise, Captain Pie, from Hobart, Tasmania. Capt. William Wiseman of H.M.S. Caroline, captured the island on March 17, 1888, despite US protests.

For 99 years the British rented the island to Lever's Pacific Plantations Limited, June 1902. However, back to Kiritimati (Christmas Island). There''s four towns on the island: Much of the place name on the island comes from Father Emmanuel Rougier, a Franciscan preacher who rented the island from 1917 to 1939 and plant about 800,000 palm-oaks there.

I also found it interesting that the British were testing their first H-bombs here in 1957 and the United States carried out Operation Dominic on Christmas Island in 1962. More recently, on 1 January 1995, Kiribati announced that its entire territories are in the same timezone as its other islands in the Gilbert Island Group (GMT +12).

Phoenix and Line Islands are under the Kiribati jurisdictional system and are on the other side of the International Date Line, but the entire archipelago is one date and not two. Christmas Island is one of the days ahead of us in the USA. The majority of the island' s inhabitants carry out sub-sistence farming such as fish and the cultivation of foodstuffs such as cannabis, breadfruits and papayas.

On the island Kiritimati live at present approx. 6000 people. A further large exporter from the island are domestic animal species flying to Honolulu, Hawaii. For more detailed discussion about the Kiribati land, there is much more information for the inquiring spirit.
