The Wairarapa (; M?ori pronunciation: [?wai?a?apa]) is a geographic area of New Zealand. North Island, just eastward of the metropolis of Wellington and southwest of the Hawke's Bay area. Its population is low and it has several country services cities, with Masterton being the biggest. It' called after its biggest pond, Wairarapa Mountain.

The Wairarapa is rectangular, about 130 kilometers long (from Palliser Bay in the south to Woodville ) and 65 kilometers broad (from the Tararua Range in the south to the coast). Kahungunu tribe's border for the area is similar. This is the most southerly of its three home countries, which run down the easterly northern island from Wairoa.

Wairarapa is part of another home for the Wairarapa strain Rangit?ne, which comprises Manawat? and Horowhenua. Tararua's new Tararua County Council encompasses the north of Wairarapa and the southwest of Hawke's Bay. Middle and southwest Wairarapa was split into three county councils: Masterton, Carterton and World Wairarapa. Martinborough, located in the Martinborough, provides the regional administration for areas just south of Carterton, including Greytown, Featherston, Martinborough and the countryside down to the Hutt.

The Carterton District Council, located in Carterton, is the most rapidly expanding area in New Zealand and the Masterton District Council includes areas as far as the Tararua District. Nationally, Wairarapa's voters extended to Hawke's Bay in the south after the introduction of the system of proportionality in 1996.

Mount Bruce to the N, which stretches through Eketahuna, Pahiatua, Woodville, Dannevirke and to the N of Norsewood, is part of the Tararua District and is located in the Manawatu-Wanganui area because it lies in the Manawatu Rivervan. It flows westwards between the two mountains (Tararua Range in the south and the Ruahine Range in the north) over Manawatu Gorge to get to the western shore of the northern island through Palmerston Nort.

On the eastern shore are villages such as Tinui, Castlepoint and Riversdale Beach, while the major southerly streams flow through the shores of the Wairarapa River and flow into Palliser Bay just off the Cook Strait. Its name means "sparkling water" and is said to have been used by an early M?ori discoverer, Haunui, who saw the streams and sea from the hills in the western part.

The Wydrop [2] was also known in colloquial language during the Spanish colonization. New Zealand's largest seismic event, reaching magnitude 8, struck the area on 23 January 1855. Martinborough, in the southern part of the country, is famous for its vineyard and wines, as are the suburbs of Masterton and Carterton.

There are several means of transportation in the area. State Highway 2 via Rimutaka Hill Road links the area with Wellington in the south and Manawatu in the north. Wairarapa rail links the area to Wellington via the Rimutaka Tunnel and the Palmerston Nord - Gisborne Line in Woodville.

The Wairarapa link from Masterton to Wellington is run by Tranz Metro. A lot of people, especially in cities in the south such as Featherston and Greytown, travel by plane or automobile across the Rimutaka Ranges to work in Wellington. Mt Bruce Wildlife Centre, located to the north of Eketahuna, is home to many of New Zealand's vulnerable indigenous avifauna.
