The Vatu Vara is located in the northwestern part of Fiji's north Lau archipelago, 32 km western of Mago Iceland and about 60 km southwest of Vanua Balavu near Lat: 5° 26'00 S Long: 179 31'00 W. The 3 km long at the foot of the 305 m high peak is also called "Hat Island" because of its form.
Approximately 60 meters high, the calcareous rocks of Mountuyot and the remainder of the islands are surrounded by thickly packed jungles. This volcano and lime stone isle has a diametre of almost 3.2 km. The 1973 305 meter high peak, the highest in Lau, is a solid pyramide, which is bordered on all sides by almost vertical rocks up to 61-meter high.
Its ridge is about 160,000 square metres in size and generally shallow, although it has 1.8 to 9.1 metre cavities, some of which are full of mineral ore. In most places at its basis there is a broad girdle of gentle slope which stands no more than 7.6 metres above sealevel and forms the edge of the cap, which suggests the shape of the isle.
At the north and east edge of the islands, the ocean is breaking against the deep washed out calcareous rocks; elsewhere, however, the islands are surrounded by a wide fringe riff that bends away sharp from the shoreline off the west coastline and surrounds the Laguna. On the steep sides of the main street, three flat patios mark the rests in the elevation of the isle, but they are not easy to observe as they are suffocated by the thick greenery that covers the entire building.
With its unmistakeable form and solid top like a giant boulder cap, it is dominating the neighbouring sky and can be seen within a 56 km range from close proximity isles such as Kaibu, Yacata and Vanua Balavu. It' in the private hands of James Jannard. Sakulawe is the Vatu Vara's custodian, a Sakulawe.
