Vanuatu, formerly known as the New Hebrides, is an island group of 83 archipelagos in the Western Pacific, some 1,750 km eastwards of Australia, at the end of a series of volcano tops extending south-eastwards of Papua New Guinea. The principal isles are Espiritu Santo, Malekula, Efate, Erromango, Ambrym and Tanna.

Vanuatu has some of the scarcest ritual and event in the whole wide range of Melanesian (Ni-Vanuatu) people. Do not miss the Pentecostal defy country diving (nagol), the Tanna Toka dancing that goes for day, the mystic Rome dancing of Ambrym Island of Sorcery and Fire, and Water Music customs by the women of Gaua Island.

Vanuatu quickly jumped into modernity and remained a place where the wealthy Melanese civilization remained very much alive. Vanuatu was abandoned by the Europeans longer than in other parts of the Pacific. The number of ports is rather small with the important except for the Efate archipelago, which has several beautiful coves.

A major attraction on the island is a trip to the living volcanos of Tanna or Ambrym, where you can climb into the nearest one. You can even drive past these archipelagoes and experience fireworks, especially at noon.

Port Vila provides good service for boats. The Port Vila Boatyard has transport equipment, ship electrician, ship mechanic and cyclon-certified berths. You can find many parts in Port Vila and Luganville or simply order and fly in from Australia, New Zealand or the USA.

Fuels: Duty-free kerosene can be ordered in Luganville and Port Vila. There are more and more businesses and outlets on the outskirts of the island that are equipped with standard articles. Nothing is comparable to the establishments in Port Vila or Luganville (the Bon Marche super market is cheap with Franco influences and many Aussie and Europe brands).

There are many small islands which are very useful for yachting and you can organize meals, guided visits and excursions by the mayor. Cruise ships have noticed the growing tendency of towns to levy fees for activity or excursions and even for city outings. The period from May to October is relatively cold and arid, while November to April is warm and moist.
