Uljanovsk (1648-1780 - Sinbirsk, 1780-1924 - Simbirsk) is a town in the western part of Russia, the capitol of the Ulyanovsk oblast, which lies on Privolzhsky Mountain, on the bank of the Volga (Kujbyshevskij Wasserreservoir ) and the river Sviyaga, 879 km south-east of Moscow. Ulyanovsk's total area is about 621,500 (2015), the area - 317 sqkm.

The Ulyanovsk fort was established in 1648 by Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich as Sinbirsk stronghold. Sinbirsk was given its first crest in 1672 in honour of its defence against Stepan Razin. It became the capital of Simbirsk in 1780 and was given a new name Simbirsk. Ulyanovsk was given a new name in honour of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), the Bolsheviks' chief, who was borne in Zimbirsk.

It became the centre of a new Ulyanovsk oblast in 1943. The Patriarchate of Moscow was evicted to Ulyanovsk during the Second World War. A number of industry companies (including the Stalin car plant) were also relocated from Moscow to Ulyanovsk. The Lenin Memorial, the Venets Palace, the Ulyanovsk State Pedagogical University buildings, the Palace of Culture, new train and riverside stops, an international airfield, etc.

The Ulyanovsk became an important touristic centre of the USSR. Ulyanovsk was the scene of a tragic incident in 1983, when the Alexander Suvorov liner fell onto a rail link over the Volga and more than 170 passengers died. Near the town there are two airfields - Ulyanovsk Central (ULK) and Ulyanovsk Vostochny (ULY).

The Ulyanovsk Harbour is situated on the right side of the Volga and in the Zheleznodorozhny area. Uljanovsk can justifiably be described as a museum town. There are many museum sites with exhibits on the town' s historical, artistic and architectural highlights. A number of historical monuments have their roots in the remote past, when Simbirsk scientists and traders gathered and presented the great patrimony of their home town.

Ulyanovsk's most famous museuses are:: The Civil Aeronautics Historical Centre - one of the biggest Russian aeronautical art galleries. Situated near Ulyanovsk Central International Aerodrome also known as Baratayevka (Mozhaiskogo Street, 8/8). Vladimir Lenin's Memorial Opened in 1941. It is a rare exposition of Lenin's work against the backdrop of the Russian Empire's end of the nineteenth and early twentieth century polĂ­tis.

Collections of life-long issues of Lenin, illicit and banned literatures, journals of satire is very interesting (Lenina Square, 1). Simbirsk Defense Line" Historic and Architecture Monument was erected in 2001 on the site of a wonderfully conserved part of the Simbirsk-Karsunskaya Defense Line fortress. It is famous for its theatre productions that bring to live the pages of the city's past (Tolstoi Street, 43a). It is a singular set of historic, culturally and architectonic relics of ancient Simbirsk.

It has ten monuments and an exposition room showing the Simbirsk way of living and tradition, the architectonic image of the old city, the Simbirsk handicraft and commerce story (Lenina Street, 98).
