So when we got a suggestion for Eccentric Britain, our first response was to reject it - it was far beyond our normal theme. Eccentric Britain was our first in the British Isles, a publication the Daily Telegraph dubbed "wonderfully barmy", which featured features such as a Derbyshire toebring contest, the Patwalloping Festival in Devon, the Giant Yorkshire Pudding Race in Yorkshire and some of the country's strangest peoples and places.

Now we have excentric leaders to London, Cambridge, Oxford and Edinburgh. Bradt's Slow Travel Guide takes your timeframe to show the way. This book, which has only been produced by writers who know their region well, encourages the visitor to leave out their "must see ticklists", slow down their tempo and take some of the most striking and specific places in the UK to savour.

Of course, the book contains all the useful information you need, but it also includes interesting resident interview, reveals some of the stories and folktales of the area and shows the authors' favorite places to go for food, drinks and walks. We want to get away from the top attractions and encouraged our writers to identify the subtle shades and distinctions that make the place meaningful - such as eating, story, nature, ecology or the locals and what moves them.
