The Penrhyn or Tongareva Penrhyn alphabet or Tongareva on-line dictionaries. The purpose of this on-line glossary is to provide rapid accessibility for Penrhynese students and practitioners. Tonggareva (Penrhyn) is the most northerly of the Cook Isles. The Penrhynese is an East Polyynesian tongue that is very much related to the other Cook Isles and to Tahiti and Tuamotuan.

It is a bi-lingual lexicon with the meaning of each keyword in German and French. You can search for both Penrhynesian and German words. Penrhyn's name is Tongareva. Tonggareva lies 1,365 km northeast of Rarotonga, 9 degrees southward of the Eq. It is 233 km2, 62 km2 of which are mother-of-pearl.

Tonggareva has two towns. Omoko, the capital of the Penrhyn Island Council, is located on the island of Moananui, on the west edge of the tunnel, just off the northern side of the airfield.

Island Tongareva

The Tongareva (or Penrhyn Island) is a large octopus whose north side lies 537 sea leagues southward of the Eq. It' s 190 sea-mile E.N.E. from Rakahanga, 325 mile west of Vostok, 235 S.W. from Starbuck and 649 leagues southward of Christmas Island. Omoka's mooring is almost exactly 9 degree southern, so sailors will find a good place to inspect their equipment.

It is 12 n.a. and s.e. with a width of 6 to 8 mile. Well, the rim's about 40 leagues away. This closed laguna has an area of about 108 sq. m. but is heavily swallowed by reef and cetaceans. A large part of the edge is occupied by low sandy and reef islands, the country reaches a level of about 14 ft and the peaks of cocos, panda and common low tree species reach about 50 ft.

And the best is the Teahua or Westpass, less than a kilometer northerly of Omoka. These have 15 ft of pond for a width of 100 tract and draughts of at least 20 ft in the area. Sekelangi or Nordwestpass is 700 meters broad, but is obstructed by reef tops so that the service of a resident flight is required, and it is not passable in harsh weathers.

On the western side there are anchorages for boats that are too big to get into the Laguna. It is one of the few safer harbours in the area for smaller boats during the stormy seasons. Boats can sail in the Laguna by taking a close look at the reef and reef tops that are clearly seen in the sun.

In Omoka there is a jetty. A sunk 12 foot (2 fathoms) wall is located three mile from the northeastern edge of the site, and it is called after the Bark Flying Venus, which was destroyed there on September 6, 1889. Tongareva means "floating Tonga" and was given to the Atlas by the Polynesians.

According to the traditions, they came to Tongareva from Manihiki, although they have a different tribe due to dark-skinned and different dialects. It was made known to Europeans by the English vessel Lady Penrhyn, Captain Sever, after being spotted by Lieutenant Watts on August 9, 1788.

Rurick, Captain Otto von Kotzebue, the research vessel, paid a visit to the apocalypse on 30 April 1816 and provided an early scholarly depiction of the isle. Porpoise brought members of the U.S. exploration expedition to the Toll on February 15, 1841. Estimates suggest that at least 1,000 men, wives and kids have been brought from this African continent to South America.

Rarotonga trading produced a free UK patronage, although the French tried to involve Tongareva in the management of the Society Islands. Tongareva came under the management of the Cook Islands of New Zealand with the declaration in Auckland on 10 June 1901. Its indigenous populations fell from 420 in 1906 to 326 in 1916, but since then it has grown to 462 in 1936, when there were also five Europeans on the isle.

Living in two towns, Omoka to the West and Tautua, nine leagues across the Laguna, on the Eastern side. Every town has a good drinking system with good drainage from cement canisters. On the small islet to the south of Omoka, Motu Unga, and from some Molokai, a leprosy clinic and a reception centre was constructed for them and leprosy patients from other near-by atols.

Tongareva's main production is coppra, pearls and pi bowls as well as local handicrafts. Many oysters and mussels were collected in the lake. On 23 June 1937, a wireless transmission system was set up and occasionally boats not dealing in Rarotonga schooner and Governmentships visited the Alm.
