The Tofua Islands is located in the Tonga Islands, in the Southern Ocean, 6 days from Switzerland. Sixty-four square kilometres of this elliptical islet, 60% of which is occupied by semi-tropical forest. Tofuas are calderas created by the eruption of an old vulcano. It is a savage place where humanity no longer has a foothold; it has been deserted for 30 years.
It has neither clean sands nor multicoloured corals, it has a vulcanic origins that have produced a completely different appearance. It' s uncommon shores are shrouded in dark sands, encircled by rocky outcrops, a setting that makes it a "Robinson Crusoe". It has a great diversity of unexpected wildlife, but it' s not often hazardous if you look at it.
Unfortunately, in 1776 the Bounty rebellion made the Bounty known. Captain Bligh and his team are spending some quality uninterrupted hours there. The indigenous people of Tofua once were the cannibal. There are more than 30,000 palm tree species spread around the isle.
Tofu & Kao Tours
Approximately 70 km westwards of Lifuka are the pyramid-shaped Kao (1030 m) and its smoky companion Tofua (515 m). At a good time, this uninhabitated couple is clearly seen from Lifuka. Tofu is a shallow volcano like Niuafo'ou in the Niua group, seen from above it resembles a giant swimming lifebelt.
Hokala is a hard one hours ascent from the Hokala airfield on the south side of the volcano. In 2008 Xavier Rosset, master of snowboarding in Switzerland, chose to become the Robinson Crusoe and stayed on the isle for 10 years. We do not recommend the four-hour walk to the uninhabitated Kao, a perfectly formed volcano cliff 4 km from Tofua, without a tour leader.
Tofua and Kao is not easily reached. Speak to the Pangai Visitor Information Centre or the organisers of Lifuka cruises if you feel like it.
