Since the global ocean is the main constituent of the Earth's atmosphere, it is an integrated part of our lives, part of the global warming process and affects climatic and meteorological models. There are 230,000 known marine organisms in the global ocean, but since much of it is uncharted, the number of marine organisms is much greater, possibly over two million.

Since it is believed that ocean living has developed, the variety of marine living is immense: Seaweeds: Seaweeds are a collective name for many photo-synthetic unicellular eucaryotes such as eucaryotes, e.g. verdalgae, silica and dinoflagella, but also multi-cellular seaweeds such as some reds (including species such as pyropia, which are the sources of eatable Nori algae) and browns (including species such as kelp).
