Taipei " can either mean the whole area or the very town. The Taipei region is the centre of Taiwan's politics, economy, education and culture and one of the most important centres in East Asia. Taipei is regarded as a truly cosmopolitan metropolis and is part of a large high-tech area.

Railways, high-speed trains, motorways, aerodromes and buses link Taipei with all parts of the Isle. There are two main airport connections to the town - Taipei Songshan and Taiwan Taoyuan. The Taipei region is home to several world-famous architecture and culture attractions, including Taipei 101, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Dalongdong Baoan Temple, Hsing Tian Kong, Lungshan Temple of Manka, National Palace Museum, Presidential Office Building, Taipei Guest House, Ximending and several downtown Night Market.

The name Taipei often appears in English-language press releases as a synekdoche for the Taiwanese people. Because of Taiwan's unclear global policy position, the word Chinese Taipei is sometimes used as a generic name for the whole nation, such as when Taiwan's officials take part in global organisations or Taiwan's competitors take part in global sports competitions.

Before the significant arrival of Han Chinese migrants, the Taipei Basin was mainly populated by the indigenous people of the Ketagalan Plain. At the beginning of the eighteenth centuries under the Qing Dynasty, the number of Han emigrants rose progressively after the administration began to facilitate regional developments. 13 ] In 1875 the north part of the archipelago was integrated into the new prefecture of Taipei.

In 1887 the Qing-Dynasty of China made Taipeh-fu the provisional capitol of the isle, when it was proclaimed a Fukien-Taiwan Provinz. 14 ][15] Taipei was officially named the county capitol in 1894. After Japan surrendered to the United States of America in 1945, the Republic of China (ROC) was given actual power over Taiwan (see Retrocession Day).

Following the loss of the Chinese continent to the Chinese Communist Party in the Chinese Civil War, the reigning Kuomintang transferred the ROC administration to Taiwan and in December 1949 proclaimed Taipei the temporary ROC capitol. 17 ][18] The Taiwanese Kuomintang sovereigns considered the town as the provincial Taiwanese capitol and its domination was prescribed by General Order No. 1.

Taipei in 1990 formed the background for the Wild Lily students' demonstrations that transformed Taiwanese society until 1996 from one-party to multiparty-democratic. Since then, the town has been the seat ofthe democratic electoral state of Taiwan. At the end of the nineteenth centuries, the area around Taipei, where the most important Han China settlement in the north of Taiwan and one of the world' s most important seaports, Tamsui, were situated, became economically important as a result of the boom in international commerce, especially exports of teas.

1875 The Taiwanese prefecture was divided from the Taiwanese prefecture in the north of Taiwan and integrated into the new Taipei prefecture as a new Qing Dynasty administration unit. The new prefecture capitol, adjacent to the thriving Bangka, Dalongdong and Twatutia cities, was called Chengnei (Chinese: ??; pinyin: chatnèi; Pe?h-?e-j?: siâ?-l?i), "the inner city", and this is where governments were built.

Taipei belonged to the Tamsui district of Taipei Prefecture and the prefecture district capitol from 1875 until the beginning of Japan's reign in 1895. In 1895, as a colony for the loss of the First Sino-Japanese War, China surrendered the Isle of Taiwan to the Empire of Japan under the Treaty of Shimonoseki.

Taipei, known as Taihoku in Japan, remained the capitol after the takeover and developed into the centre of the colonial government. It was during this era that the Municipality gained the features of an administration centre, among them many new official residences and apartments. Most of Taipei's architectural heritage stems from the era of Japan's domination, among them the presidential building that was the office of the Governor General of Taiwan.

Matsuyama (???, now Songshan District, Taipei) was incorporated into Taihoku City in 1938. Following the Japan pacific war loss and capitulation in August 1945, the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party) took complete command of Taiwan. As a result, a provisional office of the administrative governor of Taiwan Province was set up in Taipei City.

Even though even after that the city's own economic development began to slow down - its populace had become relatively steady by the mid-1990s - Taipei still remains one of the most heavily settled areas in the word, and the populace around the town, especially along the passage between Taipei and Keelung, continues to grow.

Qixing Mount lies on the Tatun volcanic group and is the highest point on the edge of the Taipei basin with its 1,120 metre (3,670 ft) crown.

Situated on a wide ridge between two hills, the area also contains the swampy Datun pond. Taipeh has a wet semi-tropical climate affected by the monsoon[28][29][30] (Köppen: Cfa). Summer is long, sunny and wet and is occasionally punctuated by torrential showers and typhoons, while winter is brief, generally mild and generally very misty, as the northeast wind from the huge Siberian high is amplified by the concentration of this colder atmosphere in the Taipei basin.

Like in the north of Taiwan, Taipei's daily temperature can often rise above 26° C on a hot winter's evening, while it can drop below 26 C on a wet summer's evening. 32 ] The degree temperature extremes varied from -0.2°C (31.6°F) on 13 February 1901 to 39.3°C (102.7°F) on 8 August 2013, while in the municipality there was never record keeping of precipitation except on mountain ranges within the municipality such as Yangmingshan.

Taipei has "excellent" skills for controlling urban ventilation in comparison to other Asiatic towns. However, the rainfall, coastal situation and strict environment constraints have kept atmospheric emissions from becoming a major public health problem, at least in comparison to South East Asia and China's developed world.

Taipei Fine Arts was founded in 1983 as the first Taiwanese fine arts center devoted to contemporary arts.

The Taipei 101 is a 101-storey, distinctive high-rise that received the highest tower rating in the word at its opening in 2004, a six-year long award before it was handed over to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The Taipei 101, developed by C.Y. Lee & Partners and built by KTRT Joint Venture, is 509 meters (1,670 ft) from floor to top, making it the first half kilometre high tower in the entire state.

The Taipei 101 is still one of the highest high-rises in the whole wide sky and has LEED certificate as the biggest "green" buildings in the whole wide area. National Theatre and Concert Hall are located at Taipei's Liberty Square and organize performances by local and overseas artists.

Further major promoters are Zhongshan Hall in Ximending and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall near Taipei 101. The Taipei area is known for its many nightshows, the most renowned of which is the Shilin Nightshows in the Shilin District. Xinyi District is equally loved by local and foreign visitors for its many amenities and shops as well as the home of Taipei 101, one of the most important attractions for visitors.

Some of the region's major retail centers are the extensive Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Building, the Breeze Centre, Bellavita, Taipei 101, the Eslite Bookstore Flag Shop (which features a fashion outlet ), The Living Mall, ATT Shop Mall and Vieshow Cinemas (formerly known as Warner Village). Xinyi County also acts as the centre of Taipei's lively night life, with several of Taipei's favorite lounging areas and night clubs concentrating on a relatively small area around the Neo19, ATT 4 FUN and Taipei 101 building.

Taipei Underground Market and the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi warehouse in the Shin Kong Life Tower are the main attractions of the flourishing Taipei Main Station area. The Zhongshan Metro Mall, Dihua Street, Guang Hua Digital Plaza and Core Pacific City are other favorite malls. The Taipei region operates an elaborate system of park, greens and protected areas.

Among the important forests and parklands in and around the town are the Yangmingshan National Park, Taipei Zoo and Da-an Forest Park. The Yangmingshan National Park (located 10 km northern of the inner city) is known for its kirsch flowers, warm water sources and sulphur deposition. Taipei Zoo was established in 1914 and has 165 ha of land for shelters.

From Taipei, the sea shores can be reached in several ways. Taipeh has a large number of Buddhist, Taoist and Traditional China Buddhist and Taoist churches. Constructed in 1738, the Mengjia Longshan Temple in Wanhua District is an example of South China influenced architectural style often found in older Taiwanese houses.

Taipei hosts many annual festival events. Over the past few years, some festival events, such as the Dopple Ten Day firework and concert, have alternated from a number of Taiwanese towns. Taipei LANTER Festival closes the Moon New Year holidays. 80 ] The city's lamp exhibition revolves year after year between different locations in the inner-city, among them Liberty Square, Taipei 101 and Zhongshan Hall in Ximending.

The Taipei region organizes its own regular participation in various cultural activities. Recently, the vibrant capital was the host of the 2009 Summer Deaf Olympics. This was followed by the Taipei Flora Exposition, a horticultural party held from November 2010 to April 2011. FloralExpo was the first of its kind in Taiwan and only the 7th in Asia, with 110,000 attendees on 27 February 2011.

An S-Bahn line linking Taipei with Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and Taoyuan Citycentre was opened in 2017. As part of the Taipei Railway Underground Project, the city's overhead contact line sections were laid below ground from 1983 onwards.

97] The Taiwanese high-speed rail system was opened in 2007. These high-speed rail services link Taipei with the western coastal towns of New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi and Tainan before ending in Zuoying (Kaohsiung) at velocities that shorten journey time by 60% or more than those normally travelled in a coach or traditional rail.

98 ] The Taiwan Railway Administration also operates passengers and cargo transportation throughout the Isle. Taoyuan is one of the world's leading airports for air travel. Most regular intercontinental air travel is operated from Taoyuan Airport in Taoyuan near the airport. The Taipei Songshan Airport, in the centre of the town in the district of Songshan, offers inland and regular air travel to Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Gimpo Airport in Seoul and about 15 locations in the People's Republic of China.

The Songshan Airport can be reached via the Taipei Metro Neihu Line; the Taoyuan International Airport via the Taoyuan Airport MRT. The Taipei region hosts the 24 university camps and the Academia Sinica, Taiwan's premier academic institution supporting the Taiwan International Graduate Program: Taiwan Normal University (NTNU or Shi-Da) also originated in the Japan time.

Taipei's Da'an neighborhood near the MRT Guting Station is known for its historical architectural heritage. As Taiwan has been under US and Japan influences over the years, especially the sport types ball and ball have become loved in the town. Taipei, like the whole Taipei region, has established itself mainly in the field of ball games and since the 1960' it has often hosted the Asian Championships.
