Tabuaeran Island
tabouaeran islandThe Tabuaeran Atlas of Kiribati.
The Tabuaeran Atlas, formerly known as the fannin or fannin island, is a reef of the Northern Line Islands, part of Kiribati, in the western-pacific. In 1798 an US merchant and discoverer, Egdmund Faning, found the island and it consists of several islands, which encircle a 51 km long Laguna.
In the first half of the twentieth centuries, the Atlas was in the possession of a copra-processing firm; it is still strongly replanted with coconut. From 1916 to 1952, the island was used as the regional capital of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony when they were relocated to the Christmas Otoll (now Kiritimati).
Its name was altered by the name of Tabuaeran in 1979 when it became part of the Kiribati family. It has become a call point for Hawaiian yacht and cruiser vessels. Overall area 13 km2 (34 km2).
