Excursions and Travels - The Swain School
Right from the start, Swain recognized the importance of leaving university to see the larger universe. Youngest children go to farmhouses, fruit gardens and municipal gardens in late summer to complement their studies of fruit and saplings. The Pennsylvania third grade pupils all are learning about their state, and Swain is doing it in a great way with visiting to William Penn's Pennsbury Manor, both to the Pennsbury Manor locals and to the state capital.
4th grade students are exploring migration and traveling to New York City to see Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. During their one-year studies in Asia, our fifth-graders attend the New York Chinatown, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Ghengis Khan exhibition at the Franklin Institute. In addition, they have at least one night excursion per year.
Intermediate pupils leave their campuses to do charitable work and to enjoy the arts, musicians and theater. One of the highlights for our pupils in class eight is the year-end journey, which they are planning with the support of their departmental advisers. Swain also offers a range of options for those who find the open air syllabus exciting, which can tempt the student to enjoy nature in an increasingly intense area.
Excursions start in class 5 with a paddling and motoring tour where Swain works with the Sultana Education Foundation to help kids go on campsites, go canoeing, and discover the Sassafras Rivers in Maryland. Sixth formers have the option of a five-day, four-day canoeing tour to the Chester Riviera in Maryland, where they canoe, paddle, campsite, fish as well as swimming for a whole sunday.
For this excursion Swain is cooperating with the Echo Hill Outdoor School and the 7. In class 7, the pupils go on this voyage by fishing, crawling, sleeping on the boat platform and sailing the Chesapeake Bay for five whole five-day and four-night cruises. As well as moderate day excursions that allow you to go in for a dip, we also offer camp site activities in cool weathers.
Classes 7 and 8 have the chance to work with Mahoosuc Guide Services on a three day camp excursion where pupils spend three nights learning dog sledding and cross-country skiing in Maine. Swain also offers a cottage adventure in conjunction with Camp Chingachgook, where you can discover ice-fish, snowshoes and the icy Lake George area.
