Travel guide for Stewart Island - Wiki travel guide Rakiori (Stewart Island in the Maori language) is New Zealand's third biggest island after the North Island and the Southern Island and is about 30 kilometers southward of the Southern Island. However, the island is much less frequented and is a heaven on land for those who love the outdoors. The area of Stewart Island is about 1,746 sqkm.

Most of the northern area is marshy and close to the Freshwater Rivier. There is a mountain range around the boggy freshwater stream and the highest point of the island is 979m: it is the highest point on the island: On the southern side, the country stands on a crest that extends southwards of the Rakeahua Riviera basin.

Farther southwards the country falls off and there are river dales like the Toitoi, Lords and Heron river. It is surrounded by a large number of archipelagos, the largest of which are Ruapuke Island, Codfish Island and Big Cape Island. No towns exist and almost all of the 400 inhabitants of the island are in the small city of Oban.

Partial privately-owned and partial nature reserve, Ulva Island may be New Zealand's nearest unspoilt area open to the population.

After an extermination programme in 1997, the island was proclaimed rat-free and exterminated bird species were brought back to the island.
