The island is covered in untouched forests and is home to birds such as the native Tui, Kaka, Sagittarius and Fantail and the endangered South Island Saddleback. Weka Stewart Island are secret by nature, but when they are exposed to humans, they can become very brave. Kaka groups fly around the Stewart Island Backpackers every day and even land right next to you.

Birdies

Some of New Zealand's best birds are found on Stewart Island. The largely unchanged island provides superb habitats and nourishment for indigenous birds. There is a lot of nourishment in the ocean around the island and it is appealing to a large number of birds. The Ulva Island is a gem in the Krone and provides a predation-free setting for uncommon and threatened birds such as South Island, Maddleback, Rohua, Rifleman, Stewart Island-Robert.

Birds often seen on Stewart Island and Ulva Island includes belly bird, wolf bird, caca, tomtite, gray wartbler, persimmon, kakariki and New Zealand dove. Several of our birds are one-of-a-kind in the area, including worka, robins and fern bird. Stewart Island Brown kiwis or Southern Tokoeka, Apteryx Australianis lawnyri - is one of six kiwis known.

Stewart Island Brown Kiwi is still alive and well. kiwifruit exceeds the number of people and it is thought that there are 20,000 on Stewart Island.
