Paper's Past | THE WEST COAST OF THE SOUTH ISLAND. {\a6}(New Zealand Herald, 1900-06-09)
WEST coastline of the South Island.... The west coastline of the South Island of New Zealand was not inappropriately called Siberia of this population. Wanganui in hot quick and popular s. s. Waverley, a tiny ship of no more than 60 tonnes, From the voyage along the shore to Wellington "least said, most likely repaired.
Beautiful wheather facilitated the passage from Wellington to Westport, but the smell of a deckful cargo of lambs and Maori swine, in additon to that of the ship, made the voyage not exactly pleasant. For our unspeakable shock, Westport Hillo in view, and we traversed the Buller River pub at eleven in the morning Westport's first sightings are not of the best, but of the charcoal, and everything seems to be part of the dirty nature of this precious resource.
Westport has between two and three thousand inhabitants. It is said that these are replaced by a crane, as the large gap between the top of the stairs and the cargo area of the ship leads to a reduction in the amount of colliery and thus to a reduction in value. There is at least one motel per 150 inhabitants for the entire coastal area.
West Port has a modern, free libary and a study room where the facilities of state schools are at their best. I made my way northwards after a brief stop in West Port. On one side it follows a small stretch of country with the "eternal hills" and the "boundless sea" on the other.
Directly after we leave Westport we cross a huge area planted with rush and flat. In Waimangaroa we see the "city on a hill" - with the name Denniston. On a Sunday afternoons we started our four mile long trip on the small way up. Oiled your way up through wonderful landscapes of all kinds.
It climbs steeply, the path is small and only suitable for the sure-footed horse and the " Shanks' belly. The other two stones were found on the route. H.R. for the county, a new route with much simpler difficulty was built for over £5000.
The new route is almost three extra mile longer than the one in use now, and many think it will hardly ever be used, and so it was called "Seddon's Mistake" and "O'Rcgan's Folly". "It is the intention to broaden this new route and build a 14 foot broad gravel drive.
Denniston's platform is a barren cliff; there is hardly a stalk of weed to be seen, and if one of the inhabitants wants to plant a backyard, he has to bring the soil from Waimangaroa. Thick fog, which often envelop Denniston for a few hours, is a danger to such man.
In Denniston the soft Zenith reaches a remarkable Cel. Most of the famed Westport charcoal is extracted from Denniston, which of course includes a variety of iniquities. In lorries, the charcoal is descended a sharp slope to the foot of the mound, from where it is transported to Westport by Locomo.
Liash has proven no different. The mine worked well for several years and things were booming, but there was an unanticipated expense, and the business got implicated and found that it could not compete with the more powerful Westport Coal Corporation, and in September last year the mine was closed for a while.
As a result, the Seddonville community has shrunk to less than a third. As a whole, I found the Westcoasters friendly, welcoming and friendly. The coastline between Westport and Seddonville is rugged and the only way to travel is by train, but it is not as dark as it is often stained.
There' s a lot of carbon in the mountains; the days are not far away when the coastline becomes a major mining center for carbon in New Zealand.
