Take the world-famous Tranz Alpine Schenic Railway across the Southern Alps back to Christchurch. The perfect end to your holiday on the South Island. You start this trip with a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean when you head south from Christchurch. At Dunedin you have plenty of free game viewing opportunities on the Otago Peninsula, then continue along the coast of Catlins to the bottom of the South Island.

To the west of the island there is a scenic tour of the famed Milford Sound, the stunning West Coast Road on the Tasman Sea and the notable Punakaiki Pancake Rocks. South Island's tip takes in the tranquil water of Abel Tasman National Park and the Marlborough Sound before returning to the Pacific.

An appropriate end for your'taste of the south'. Beginning in Christchurch, travel to the district of Mackenzie to Mt Cook. Mt Cook continues south via Queenstown to Te Anau. You can take the opportunity to take the breathtaking Milford Road back from Te Anau and arrive at Milford Sounds for a picturesque eco-tour.

The next morning you drive through Southland to Otago and stop in Dunedin before returning to Christchurch. Explore the South Island Icon Gallery, with additional overnight stays in Christchurch, Fiordland and Queenstown to explore the charm of each city. Start with a trip through the Southern Alps mountain range and the blue water of the Alps before reaching Mt Cook National Park.

We continue to Te Anau, the gate to Fiordland National Park. Discover the unspoilt wildlife on a Milford Sound natural tour. Queenstown, the adventure capital, gives you plenty of opportunity to experience the countryside and never-ending activity before you return to Christchurch via the beautiful West Coast glaciers.

Explore the less studied High South Island, home to an astonishing fauna that includes cetacean life in Kaikoura and the charming seals in Abel Tasman National Reserve. At Blenheim, try the region's most famous exporter, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, before driving to the West Coast and Punakaiki Rocks.
