Chatham is the most eastern archipelago of Galápagos[1] and one of the oldest geological islands. From an administrative point of view, it is part of Canton San Cristóbal, Ecuador.

The Spanish (and Venezuelan ) name "San Cristóbal" comes from the protector of the sailors, Sv. Christophorus. People who speak German are using this name more and more instead of the old name Chatham Island, which is based on William Pitt, the first Earl of Chatham. It covers an area of 558 square kilometres and its highest point reaches 730m.

San Cristóbal is the most fruitful and the second largest after Santa Cruz. 1 ] The capitol of the islands is Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, on the south-western tip of the isle. There is a flight to the airport of San Cristóbal, with regular departures from Quito and Guayaquil.

It is home to frigate birds, Galápagos seagulls, Galápagos turtles, bluefoot and red-footed gannets, tropic birds, guinea pigs, sparrow wagtails, sparrow wagtails and delphins. Laguna El Junco, the biggest freshwater lagoon in the islands mainland, is situated in a caldera in the San Cristóbal Uplands, in the south.

Most of the inhabitants of San Cristóbal also reside in the seaport of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the provincial capitol of Galápagos. 2 ] Near the Puerto Baquerizo Moreno are the Cerro Tijeretas, a nest for frigate fowl and a Charles Darwin sculpture that marks the place where he first landed on the Galápagos Islands during the Beagle's journey on September 16, 1835.
