The Swa Ocean Rift Valley
The Samoan Islands are situated in the Pacific Ocean, just below the Ecuadorian Sea, half way between Australia and Hawaii. With its sandy beach, coral-rich water, stunning falls and abundant rain forest, Samoa is an unspoilt nature haven just awaiting to be explored. Have a look at our schedule of activities in Samoa and plan your next trip to a tropic isle.
The Sua Ocean Trench is the most popular tourist destination in Samoa for apparent reason. This bubbling waters can only be reached via a simple wood staircase that takes the visitor to a jumping bridge from which he can dive into the crystalline waters. Formerly a bathing place for great soldiers, the of course spectecular Toitogiga Falls are only a brief hike into the Togitogiga Forests.
The local people set off for a picnic at the weekends and go swimming, diving and wading in the waterfalls, which become a torrential stream after a torrential pour. And if you feel like a trek, a three-hour tour takes you to the Pe'ape'a Caves. Samoa's hot sea regularly attracts turtles who want to sunbathe in the sea and eat from the blooming underwater world.
The tortoises that once searched for nourishment are now sheltered by the local people who have made it their mission to give them a shelter. A number of tortoise sanctuaries exist in Samoa, but the best way to see these great animals is to dive into their native habitats and bathe between them in coral-filled water.
Nature's slides are stylish, and Samoa's Papase'ea Sliding Skirts will plunge grown-ups and children in soft waterfalls into a fresh hole. The cliffs of Papasea'ea, removed by millennia of running waters, have been shaped into a five-metre long and three smaller pools that provide the ideal opportunity to chill out on a warm summer evening.
Located on the Savaii Islands, visitors to the Alofaago Blasholes must tim their photographs with care, as the sea blasts up to ten meters into the sky, while the sea pushes it through a series of rocks. But be careful when the natives are around, because they like to put rocks in the blow holes and observe how they are blown up by the waters.
It' s thought that this is an old path for the ghosts of the ancestors to get to the Devil's Shade at Cape Mulinu'u, the last place where they meet before entering the spirit world known as Pulotu to the Samoans.
