UpDate: StarKist Samoa sublets Samoa tuna processing plant | American Samoa
AMERICAN SAMOA - The Lolo administration hopes that StarKist Inc. The subletting of Samoa Tuna Processors (STP) Inc. will stimulate domestic jobs, a message shared by some in the residential area, which aims to increase the area' s economy by creating jobs. On Friday mornings StarKist Inc. announces that on the same date, May 25th, it has signed a "10-year lease" with Tri Marine International for the STP plant to assist the operation of StarKist Samoa.
STP has the country in which it is situated and Tri Marine has a long-term leasehold contract with the localovernment. According to the authorities, the rental contract with StarKist is regarded as a subletting contract and therefore needs the approval of Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga. This March the Taotasi Archie Soliai of StarKist Samoa officially acknowledged during the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council meet in Honolulu that StarKist is "currently using a portion" of the STP refrigerated warehouse to try to absorb a portion of this work.
" The Taotasi is one of three US Samoa members of the Council. Ever since, there has been a lot of discussion in the industry about "possible negotiations" for a longer rental contract between StarKist and Tri Marine about the use of STP, since the canneries were closed in December 2016 and around 800 employees were laid off.
TRINARY Marine is continuing to use the plant as a "logistical hub". "StarsKist will further work with governments and businesses to tackle crucial problems affecting StarKist's American Samoa business," said Sen. Thanking Tri Marine, StrictKist said: "We look forward to our further cooperation.
" StarKist also expressed its thanks to the Gouverneur, his government and the Fono for their assistance in this work. The StarKist has not explained the kind of surgery it is planning for STP. "Iulogologo said last Friday mornings, "The government would be happy to know that the talks have been concluded so that StarKist can push ahead with its plan, in the hopes that more employment will be generated and added economics.
StarKist has tried since the Togiola administration to protect federal lands to construct a cold store and the canning factory has also worked in close cooperation with the Lolo administration. "As a result, at least the present job levels at StarKist should be maintained and more positions should be created by the end of the year," Lafaele said this week-end.
StarKist announces in a local press announcement on May 2 that it will be launching its latest innovative products, a country-wide available chick creations bag this year. According to StarKist, the line of our top quality chickens is available in four flavours in the typical ready-to-eat bags. Read tomorrow's issue on Tri Marine's response and other information.
